Description: Administers nursing care within the scope of practice as set forth in state regulations under the direction of registered nurses, licensed physicians, dentists, podiatrists, optometrists, or chiropractors. Tasks may include administering oxygen, applying sterile dressings, inserting catheters, reinserting gastrotomy tubes, suctioning, irrigating wounds, giving enemas, collecting specimens, and performing dialysis treatments. Operates hemodialysis equipment and monitors patients during procedures. Assists healthcare professionals with physical exams, treatments, and laboratory tests. Provides emergency assistance by administering first aid, performing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, and restraining patients. Administers controlled drugs, including narcotics and minor tranquilizers, along with non-controlled medications in various forms and provides medication instructions to patients. Maintains medication accountability records by charting patient records, preparing and counting medication, and ensuring the stock of medication and medical supplies. Observes, documents, and reports on patient conditions, including medication reactions, treatment responses, and patient behavior. Prepares and maintains related reports and records. Provides general nursing care and direct care assistance, including taking patient vital signs and assisting with personal grooming and daily living activities. Administers topical ointments and solutions, eye, ear, and nose drops. Repositions patients and responds to patient alarms while making medical appointments and assisting with recreational activities. Provides one-on-one support and group activities according to the treatment plan. Assists and provides direction, orientation, and training to lower-level direct care staff in delivering general unskilled nursing care. Participates in various meetings as assigned, including staff conferences and interdisciplinary team meetings. Orders medication and medical supplies and performs clerical tasks as needed. Cleans and sterilizes the nursing station and medication room and restocks supplies.
