Senior Fire Safety Specialist/Fire Lieutenant

Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree (foreign equivalent or higher). In lieu of the degree, four (4) years of directly related experience, or a combination of higher education and experience totaling four (4) years. Three (3) years of full‑time experience as an emergency responder (volunteer experience considered). Two (2) years of experience as an operational fire officer (volunteer experience considered). NYS Fire Officer 1. NYS/Pro Board Firefighter 1. First Aid with CPR. Haz‑Mat Technician. NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700 and 800. NYS Code Enforcement Official or ability to obtain certification within 1 year of employment. NYS Confined Space Technician. NYS Driver License – must maintain a valid license with a clean driving record. Out‑of‑State Applicants: must provide evidence of a valid license and driving abstract from the issuing state within five business days of a conditional offer and obtain a NYS driver license within 30 days of start date. Preferred Qualifications Additional four (4) years of full‑time experience as an emergency responder (volunteer experience considered). NYS/National Registry EMT. Brief Description of Duties The Senior Fire Safety Specialist / Fire Lieutenant will collaborate with the Fire Services team to protect life and property and provide fire protection and emergency services to all Stony Brook University facilities and surrounding properties. The role involves fire safety inspections, emergency response, fire drill coordination, system testing, training, and regulatory compliance. Emergency Response Coordination Provide first‑line supervision of subordinate personnel during emergencies while riding a fire apparatus. Lead subordinates, maintain compliance with reports, and act as a senior specialist on the incident management team. Follow incident command protocol and provide direction during emergencies. Collaborate with the Emergency Management team, UPD, medical personnel, and other relevant departments for a coordinated response. Establish effective communication channels with local fire departments, law enforcement, and regulatory agencies. Fire Prevention and Safety Lead fire prevention efforts through inspections, hazard assessments, and corrective action recommendations. Coordinate extinguisher inspections, hazard assessments, and compliance with OSHA, NYS Fire Codes, NFPA Standards, and other applicable standards. Conduct occupancy reviews, complete deficiency reports, provide follow‑up, and maintain records. Perform site safety inspections and issue hot‑work, confined space entry, and tent permits. Ensure adequate fire prevention measures and air monitoring before permit issuance. Coordinate and conduct fire drills across all campus facilities and evaluate evacuation effectiveness. Assist with Safety Warden and Fire Warden training programs. Contribute to building emergency plan development, evacuation plans, and fire department pre‑planning activities. Perform periodic inspection and testing of fire protection systems (standpipes, sprinklers, hydrants, etc.) per NFPA Standards. Conduct water‑supply system tests to confirm adequate fire flow for department operations. Provide fire safety coverage at special events, emergencies, and other assigned situations. Training Programs Conduct fire safety training for students, faculty, and staff, including new‑student and staff orientation programs. Organize and participate in fire prevention activities and events. Regulatory Compliance Implement EH&S campus safety programs, including lab inspections, chemical inventories, SDS reviews, environmental monitoring, hazardous waste collections, and emergency planning. Investigate complaints, perform practical reviews, and maintain certifications and proficiency. Keep up‑to‑date with fire codes, regulations, and standards; provide compliance reports and documentation for audits. Ensure all vehicles, equipment, and gear are response‑ready. Operate and maintain firefighting, rescue, EMS equipment, and life support techniques. Senior Fire Safety Specialist Duties Conduct investigations to determine fire causes, analyze evidence, and recommend corrective actions. Perform fire safety and hazard assessments as assigned. Review drawings for conformity with NYS Building Code, NFPA Life Safety Code, Joint Commission standards, and other fire protection codes. Maintain enforcement of construction site fire safety regulations; exercise shutdown authority for violations in consultation with the Director of Fire Safety. Other Duties Perform duties or projects as assigned, appropriate to rank and departmental mission. Special Notes This is a full‑time FLSA Non‑Exempt position, eligible for overtime. The position includes a $4,000 UUP annual location pay, paid biweekly. Evening and weekend work will be required at times. Work visas are not sponsored. Employment Details Salary: $84,050 - $89,050.
