Consumer Safety Inspector

Summary $5,000 sign‑on bonus, creditable service for annual leave accrual, public service loan forgiveness program, accelerated promotion program (KS & MO locations only), and referral bonus awards are available. Shifts and species will vary based on assignment. Duties Performed as a Consumer Safety Inspector: conduct inspections of meat, poultry, and egg products to ensure compliance with federal statutes; sample products; perform field tests; prepare written reports; recommend corrective actions; communicate findings orally; work independently on routine assignments. Qualifications Specialized experience required. For GS‑05: at least 52 weeks of experience in inspection, sampling, quality control, or sanitation in a food manufacturing or production environment. For GS‑07: at least one year of specialized experience (GS‑05 level) and independent performance of standard duties. For GS‑08: at least one year of specialized experience (GS‑07 level) and experience working under the Federal Meat, Poultry, and Egg Products Inspection Acts, SSOP/HACCP principles, basic mathematics and statistics for testing and sampling. For GS‑09: at least one year of specialized experience (GS‑08 level) and experience at a more independent level, such as recommending refusal of exports and providing temporary coverage at other locations. Volunteer work (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) may be considered for qualifying experience. Physical and Medical Requirements Must be physically and medically capable of performing essential job functions in a hazardous environment; ability to stand and walk on uneven floors; lift up to 30 pounds (occasionally 50 pounds); manual dexterity; vision at least 20/40, color discrimination; hearing within normal limits or with amplification assessed case‑by‑case.
