Medical Laboratory Technician

About the Role To coordinate and participate in a variety of complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests used to obtain data for use by the physician in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Major Duties and Responsibilities Process and accession patient samples. Perform routine and specialized laboratory tests that may include chemical, microscopic, bacteriologic and other examinations, from waived to high complexity. Operate and maintain manual and automated laboratory equipment. Prepare reagents, chemicals, and other solutions. Evaluate and release patient test and quality control results. Participate in the evaluation and installation of new instruments and/or test procedures. Participate in quality processes. Train new staff members and respond to questions from clinic staff. Maintain patient confidentiality. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Education: Bachelor’s of Science in Medical Technology or related field with certification as a Medical Technologist by a nationally recognized board/agency. Associate of Science in Medical Technology or related field with certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician by a nationally recognized board/agency. High school diploma or equivalent plus 60 semester hours, including 24 semester hours of medical technology courses or 24 semester hours of science courses (6 hours of chemistry, 6 hours of biology, and 12 hours of advanced chemistry or biology), and completion of an approved clinical laboratory training program of at least 3 months in each specialty required for high-complexity testing. Experience: 2 years’ experience in a medical laboratory environment. Language Skills: read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine correspondence; speak effectively before individuals or groups. Mathematical Skills: calculate basic figures and amounts; apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Reasoning Skills: solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations with limited standardization; interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Computer Skills: knowledge of basic computer software. Other Skills and Abilities: strong written and oral communication skills; demonstrate a positive, cooperative, and professional attitude toward co‑workers and the public. Physical Demands Stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear. Frequently lift or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. Work Environment Professional lab environment; routine use of standard lab equipment. Compensation Hourly Rate Range: $31–33. Travel Primarily local during the business day. Minimal travel is expected on a regular basis.
