$7,500 Sign-on BONUS* Job Announcement Now Hiring: Part-Time Deputy Sheriffs (Day shift) – Fairfax County Sheriff’s Office. Qualified individuals holding a valid Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Certification are invited to serve part‑time in our Confinement Division on day shift. Position Details Schedule: 40 hours per pay period, consisting of five 8‑hour shifts (7 a.m. – 3 p.m.), including every other weekend and two weekday shifts per pay cycle. Training: Selected candidates will attend a 4‑week Deputy School (unless already certified in Civil, Court, and Jail operations) followed by our structured Field Training Program. Illustrative Duties Supervise inmate activities, prevent escapes, and maintain order, discipline, and security. Takes appropriate action in emergency situations per established plans. Escort prisoners to and from courts and the Adult Detention Center. Process inmates in and out of the Adult Detention Center. Oversee inmates in a specific area of the Adult Detention Center. Direct or escort all inmates in an assigned area. Keep a continual count of inmates in an assigned area. Oversee handling and security of inmate property. Investigate complaints concerning missing or mishandled inmate property. Transport inmates and other individuals in custody by vehicle. Ensure accurate files are maintained for supply transactions and office equipment repair. Perform routine law‑enforcement duties as required (traffic enforcement, accident response, investigations, etc.). Maintain complete and accurate records and prepare clear, concise reports. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of policies, procedures, and practices of the functional area. Knowledge of federal, state, and county laws affecting duties. Knowledge of standard operating procedures, including plans for riot, hostage, fire, and disaster. Knowledge of agency IT systems (e.g., PC’s). Skill in the use of firearms, defensive tactics, and non‑lethal weapons. Ability to operate vehicles, emergency equipment, radio, and CAD. Physical arrest capability. Maintain appropriate physical fitness. Work a shift schedule that includes evenings, weekends, and holidays. Work effectively under stress. Establish and maintain good working relationships with staff, inmates, and agencies. Handle situations requiring tact, diplomacy, fairness, and good judgment. Accurate observation and memory of names, faces, and details. Communicate clearly, both orally and in writing. Employment Standards Minimum Qualifications: Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. Certificates and Licenses Required Valid motor vehicle driver’s license at time of appointment. Current certification as a Virginia DCJS Law Enforcement Officer. Necessary Special Requirements Must be a U.S. citizen. Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation, polygraph, and psychological examination. Must obtain a Class "A" medical rating before appointment. Must be a non‑smoker at time of appointment and sign a Condition of Employment Agreement to refrain from smoking. Must work a shift schedule that includes evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shift hours and assignments may change at the discretion of the Sheriff. Physical Requirements Perform duties with or without reasonable accommodation; requires use of firearms, defensive tactics, vehicle operation, emergency equipment, radio, CAD, and appropriate physical fitness. Must work effectively under stress and communicate clearly. Selection Procedure Applicants must complete a background investigation, polygraph, psychological and medical exam, and serve a 12‑month probationary period commencing upon graduation from training.
