The Department of Facilities Management supports the mission of the University of Denver's physical resources in order to provide a healthy and safe educational environment for campus community through services of the departments of Capital Projects and Planning, Facilities Management, Parking & Mobility Services, Auxiliaries & Real Estate, and Business & Operations.

Position Summary

Reporting to the Director of Facility Management & Campus Operations in the Department of Facilities Management, the Lead Electronic Systems is a non-exempt (hourly) position that provides technology solutions and support for campus life safety and security systems. This position supports fire alarm systems, intrusion and panic alarm systems, camera surveillance systems, and C-Cure access control systems. The position is responsible for annual inspections of fire alarm systems in accordance with NFPA 72 regulations and other equipment required by the City and County of Denver.

The support requirements for the C-Cure access control system, camera surveillance systems, and intrusion and panic alarm systems are limited to the hardware component.

The position requires the employee to maintain a working relationship with other service Departments (ie. View email address on click.appcast.io, Telephone Services, Campus Safety, etc.). The position requires the employee to work on-call for emergencies on a 24/7 basis on a rotating schedule with a response to the campus on emergency callouts within a designated period after notification. The position requires the employee to maintain a clean driving record in accordance with the University of Denver driving policies.

Essential Functions

In addition to following the University of Denver's policies and procedures, principal responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Facilitate the maintenance, programming and repair of all campus-wide access control (C-Cure) and alarmed security systems.as required.
  • Install, program, test, maintain, and repair multiple brands of fire alarm panels, initiating devices, and notification appliances.
  • Participate in fire and life safety system testing, including annual inspections, load testing, and device replacement.
  • Creates and maintains records of each fire alarm account.
  • Serves as project manager to oversee contracted vendors performing life safety system work to ensure quality and code compliance.
  • Assists in the coordination of installation and/or integration of all new fire alarm systems.
  • Assist in design review and commissioning of new construction or renovation projects affecting life safety systems.
  • Develop and facilitate training for Campus Safety personnel to trouble-shoot fire alarm problems and the operation of new fire alarm systems. Time commitment estimate of two hours per month.
  • Leads one full-time electronic systems technician.
  • Adheres to all Department and University policies, procedures, directives, rules, and regulations.
  • Provides project management services for Campus Safety projects in-progress only, including the blue assistance station phones/mass communication battery replacement project.
  • Support emergency response activities and provide technical assistance during alarm activations.
  • Maintain awareness of evolving fire codes, NFPA standards, and industry best practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Comprehensive knowledge of fire alarm systems (Notifier, Simplex, Siemens, EST, or similar) and their programming.
  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret blueprints/construction diagrams, general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write and produce reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
  • Effective communication and customer service skills to interact with faculty, staff, contractors, and inspectors. Understanding of NFPA 72, NFPA 70, and local fire/life safety codes.
  • Ability to read, analyze, interpret, and calculate basic mathematical formulas, construction cost bids, and other similar types of technical documents or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only a limited standardization may exist.
  • Ability to pull and interpret permits and inspection documentation. Ability to self-direct own work and capable of effectively coordinating the work of others.
  • Ability to work in a team-oriented environment that requires individual thought and initiative.
  • Capable of facilitating the interactions of diverse needs and complex organization.
  • Ability to maintain professional standards and conduct during stressful and oftentimes emotional situations.
  • Ability to deliver and follow detailed instructions.
  • Ability to respond to emergencies after hours and participate in on-call rotations.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical certification or associate degree preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of experience with fire alarm, access control, and security systems in a campus or institutional environment.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple system brands and coordinating with fire authorities.
  • NICET II (or higher) Fire Alarm Systems certification or equivalent required.
  • Denver Fire Department Fire Alarm Journeyman License.
  • Previous experience as an installer and/or service technician of low voltage electronic systems (i.e. intrusion alarm systems, card access, fire alarm systems and CCTV).
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Colorado drivers license and be insurable under University guidelines; or, obtain a valid Colorado's driver's license within the required time frame.
  • Must pass a complete background check to include criminal, motor vehicle report and verification of employment and education.
  • Must pass a pre-employment drug screen administered by a University approved facility.

Preferred Qualifications

  • NICET III or IV Fire Alarm certification.
  • Factory certification in C-Cure 9000 or similar access control system.
  • Experience with low voltage, network integration, or IP-based alarm systems.
  • Experience in higher education, healthcare, or complex multi-building environments.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Working Environment

Works in a standard to small office environment. 50% at workstation, 50% in the field working with other Departments on development of specific unit plans. Unexpected interruptions occur frequently, and stress levels are moderate. The noise level is usually quiet to moderate. There are occasions where the employee will be exposed to all types of outdoor weather conditions. Additionally, this position may occasionally be called to work different hours or locations; the position also serves as an "on-call" technician on a rotating basis.

Physical Activities

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit and or stand for prolonged periods of time. May also be required to routinely lift 25 pounds and occasionally 50 pounds. This position generally works equal amounts of time indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions. May be expected to work on a ladder up to 20 feet above the ground for extended periods of time. Specific vision abilities required for this position include close vision, distance vision, night vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Schedule

Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

Salary Grade Number: The salary grade for the position is 12.

Hourly Range: The hourly range for the position is $37.00-$40.00

The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidate's sex or any other protected status.
