Marine Welder - 28246HII's Mission Technologies division is looking for a Marine Welder. This opportunity resides with Global Security (GS). Mission Technologies' Global Security (GS) group comprises live, virtual, constructive (LVC) solutions; fleet sustainment; nuclear and environmental; and Australia business. HII Platform Modernization (PM) trades teams provide expert solutions on US Naval Vessel alterations and installations for fleet modernization. The selected Marine Welder candidate will support the PM Ventilation Modernization Team, working closely with our skilled trades teams, on active class surface ships using various processes, mechanical techniques and related tools to remove, install, and upgrade industrial equipment, assisting with alterations and installations for fleet modernization on various contracts. Weekend and/or overtime hours may be required depending on contract awards and support required as per trade/skill set. Selected candidates will be required to commute to and maintain access to shipyards and military bases located around the Hampton Roads area depending on contract obligations. Selected candidates may be required to travel to shipyards and military bases located around the country and abroad when not assigned to a local task. Per Diem provided based on location when on travel. Travel and lodging expenses are covered by the company.Candidate must be able to demonstrate welding ability on needed processes through X-ray qualification testing and pass with a satisfactory grade from our Quality Assurance Team within the first three weeks from start date for continued employment.Essential Job ResponsibilitiesDisplay levels of quality, integrity, safety, respect, engagement, and performance consistent with company values.Support trades team by working on active class surface ships to assist with alterations and installations for fleet modernization.Perform all work in accordance with established quality and safety procedures.Perform a variety of simple and complicated tasks, both routine and non-routine, including those outside of specialty, related to shipboard maintenance to meet standards on various contracts at company, customer and/or field locations.Work from blueprints, engineering sketches, charts, or work orders.Install, operate, maintain, repair, and modify structural and ventilation elements and equipment.Lay out and mark points and lines on parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe or templates.Cut, fit, assemble, and position pieces to be welded into jigs, holding fixtures, and existing structure using hand and powered tools.Apply comprehensive understanding of appropriate welding processes (SMAW Steel and GTAW Aluminum) and production to join, surface, fabricate, and repair parts of metal, sheet metal, and other weld-able materials toward completion of assignments.Develop and use technical documents including controlled work packages, formal work processes and procedures, test documents, reports and task or trip reports.Inspect completed work for conformance to specifications.Provide guidance and work leadership to less-experienced tradespersons.Troubleshoot and diagnose malfunctions to eliminate problems in minimum time.Participate in special projects as required.Minimum QualificationsMust have High School education or Trade School or equivalent, and 4 years of related experience.Prefer technical/professional certifications.Must be able to obtain medical clearance to wear a half-face respirator.Must have welding experience with stick welding (SMAW) process in all positions from 2G to 6G for Carbon and Stainless Steel.Must have Aluminum sheet metal and steel structural welding experience with gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW) processes in all positions from 2G to 6G.Must have working knowledge of reading and interpreting drawings, blueprints, weldments, technical manuals, engineering sketches, charts and/or work orders as well as written and verbal instruction for products to be fabricated and/or installed.Must be able to accurately read and follow welding symbols.Must be able to accurately read measuring devices to 1/16 of an inch.Must have knowledge of quality control steps and procedures.Must adhere to safety and quality procedures set forth by HII and host facilities.Must have experience working in a team environment.Must be able to obtain and maintain a DoD security clearance and maintain clearance level throughout employment.Must be able to obtain shipyard access credentials within 7 days of start date and maintain credentials throughout employment.Must be able to travel between 25% and 50% when not assigned to local tasking.Must provide hand tools and trade specific PPE per trades designation.Preferred RequirementsCandidates with experience performing welding and structural work aboard naval vessels are highly preferred.Candidates with current or prior welding certificates applicable with MIL-STD-248 highly preferred.Candidates with shipfitting or sheet metal working experience are highly desired.Candidates who have graduated from and/or completed a vocational school, apprenticeship program or a skilled trades certificate program are preferred.Current OSHA 10 Maritime Certificate preferred.Physical RequirementsMust be able to lift, carry and transport heavy equipment and boxes. The exact weight requirements will be determined by the specific job, but no less than 30 lbs.Able to work on and climb ladders, work in extreme temperature environments, aboard ships, in shipyards, under industrial conditions and in confined spaces.Able to perform other duties as required which may involve high heat, humidity, noise and dirty conditions, working aloft or over the sides of vessels.May ride ships at sea for extended periods.May require wearing a respirator.Travel may be required within and outside of the continental United States.
