Under general supervision of the Mechanic Specialist and Transportation Supervisor, the Utility Worker supports all work within the mechanical shop. The position is responsible for supporting a safe and reliable school bus fleet that is in compliance with all state and federal regulations and performing repairs and maintenance of school buses, vans, trucks, and other mechanical equipment of the school district.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Transportation Mechanical Shop Support implementation of the program for performing preventative maintenance of District owned vehicles and equipment
• Support the Mechanic Specialist with recordkeeping for all buses, vehicles, and maintenance equipment
• Assist with ordering and maintenance of inventory of parts, supplies, materials, and equipment as needed, using purchasing process authorized by the Transportation Supervisor
• Keep legible records and make reports related to all repair costs
• Communicate concerns to the Mechanic Specialist and Transportation Supervisor
• Effective Inspections and Compliance Schedule, inspect, and service school buses, automobiles, trucks, forklifts, edgers, mower and the like, diagnosing trouble and making repairs or adjustments
• Inspect buses and other District vehicles to insure compliance with health and safety standards or State and Federal regulations; use diagnostic equipment to evaluate the operation and repair of engines, electrical, automotive systems, and equipment
• Inspect, adjust, troubleshoot, and repair braking systems, balance and align wheels, rotate tires, and replace clutches
• Perform road tests to evaluate malfunctions, needed maintenance, or check on recent repairs
• Assists with State safety inspections
• Maintain the bus garage in a clean, orderly, and safe manner, free from hazardous conditions, in compliance with all health and safety regulations
• District Vehicle Maintenance and Repair Assists with upkeep of bus maintenance, including brake application, organizing tools, preventative maintenance and ongoing small repairs
• Conducts diagnostics and assists with repairs
• Assists with conducting inspections
• Perform other vehicular maintenance as may be required
• Respond to bus breakdowns on the road
• Other Related Duties Drive daily bus route in both morning and afternoon
• Support maintenance of file of Owner's, Driver's, and Service manuals
• May administer minor first aid
• Participate in available training to meet new safety and/or technology standards
• Attend meetings related to assignment
• Performs other related duties as assigned by his/her supervisor

Must possess and maintain a valid California Commercial Class B driver's license and school bus driver certificate. A physical is a requirement of the post-offer process for this position. Drug and alcohol testing is a requirement of the post-offer process for this position. Random and periodic drug and alcohol testing is required of this position.

Knowledge of: Methods, materials, tools and equipment necessary for the repair and maintenance of a variety of automotive and diesel equipment Diesel, gasoline, and alternatively fueled engines and related equipment repair and maintenance procedures Hydraulic and air brake systems, shock absorbers, doors, and other coach equipment Heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems (HVAC) Occupational hazards of the mechanics trades and applicable health and safety laws, regulations, and practices Operation and use of hand, power tools and equipment used in gasoline or diesel engine repair and maintenance of related parts or equipment, including electric and high tech diesel engines Fuels, fluids, and chemicals used in maintenance and operation of buses and other automotive vehicles, including compressed natural gas, gasoline, oil, transmission or brake fluid, battery acid, etc. Proper lifting techniques Standard arithmetic and basic business English, spelling, grammar, and punctuation Inventory methods and practices; proper record keeping techniques Technology and computer software applications as appropriate to the work environment.

Ability to: Read, interpret, and understand maintenance manuals, mechanical and electrical schematics or diagrams. Learn, plan, formulate and execute federal, state, district, and departmental policies, procedures and directives, in accordance with assigned duties. Read, understand, interpret, and follow laws, rules, regulations, processes, policies, and methods of the office, the District, and the State of California, California Highway Patrol Use initiative and judgment in discussing problems with the public and district staff, involving District practices and policies. Establish and maintain co-operative relationships with those contacted during the performance of required duties, including students, school personnel, parents, vendors, co-workers, and the community. Perform under demanding and varied work schedule with ability to remain flexible and focused during interruptions and distractions. Communicate effectively in the English language, both orally and in writing. Understand and follow oral and written directions.

Education and Experience A high school diploma or GED equivalency sufficient to assure the ability to read and write English and to perform mathematical calculations at the level required for successful job performance. Possession of a valid Class B Commercial California driver's license (as appropriate to the assignment) and School Bus Driver Certificate. Combination of training and experience that has provided the applicant with the required knowledge and abilities to successfully perform job duties PLUS 3 years experience as a journey-level mechanical maintenance experience, including experience in the repair and maintenance of heavy gas and diesel powered equipment. Basic English usage, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and report and/or letter writing.

Working Conditions

Contacts Daily contacts with other maintenance workers. Frequent contacts with Principals and other school personnel.
