Assistant General Counsel

Assistant General Counsel (260002DE) The Department of Developmental Services (DDS) seeks an Assistant General Counsel (Counsel II) for its Southeast Region, based in Wrentham. Assistant General Counsels play a key role in advancing DDS’s mission by providing practical, solutions-oriented legal advice on a broad range of matters including Probate and Family Court proceedings, benefits eligibility, service delivery, privacy and records, protective services, tort liability, and agency regulations and policy. In this role you will represent DDS in guardianship matters, administrative proceedings such as eligibility, priority, ISP appeals, BSEA matters, and DALA hearings. You will also oversee the regional legal office, supervise paralegals and support staff, and collaborate with the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office. Responsibilities Represent DDS in Probate Court and administrative proceedings, including guardianship matters, eligibility and ISP appeals, BSEA cases, and DALA hearings; prepare pleadings, memoranda and related legal documents. Provide timely legal advice and consultation to DDS staff on probate law, protective services, privacy/records, torts, and agency regulations and policy. Manage and oversee all legal operations within the regional office, supervising paralegals/support staff, tracking cases and deadlines, maintaining records and statistics, and ensuring efficient workflow. Respond to subpoenas, records requests, risk reviews, and other legal correspondence; complete administrative responsibilities accurately and promptly. Assist the Attorney General’s Office with cases involving DDS. Develop and deliver trainings to field staff on legal matters and regional legal office processes. Maintain professional relationships with DDS staff, clinicians, court personnel, and external stakeholders. Perform additional legal and administrative duties as assigned, including statewide travel as required. Required Qualifications Commitment to public service and mission of DDS. Active member of the Massachusetts Bar or eligible to waive into Massachusetts Bar and at least three years of full-time or equivalent part-time professional experience in the practice of law. Ability to interpret legal opinions, laws, court decisions, rules, regulations, proposed legislation, and administrative rulings. Strong legal research, analysis, and writing skills. Excellent oral and written advocacy skills. Detail-oriented and highly organized, with the ability to multi-task and prioritize work. Capacity to maintain accurate records and exercise discretion with confidential information. Possession of current and valid Motor Vehicle Driver’s License at a Class level specific to assignment. Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams). Preferred Qualifications Experience handling court or administrative hearings. Proven track record as a team player.
