AMHCA Mental Health Therapist Intern
Join a rewarding Student Internship Program designed for master's level therapy students seeking hands-on experience in counseling, behavioral health, and human services. This internship supports personal and professional growth by providing outpatient behavioral health treatment under the guidance of university and placement supervisors.
Essential Functions:
- Deliver individual, family, and group therapy tailored to internship hour requirements.
- Collaborate compassionately with clients using culturally responsive and trauma-informed approaches to develop personalized treatment plans.
- Conduct intakes, diagnostic assessments, and mental status exams at intake and every 90 days or as needed.
- Implement medically necessary treatment services and determine appropriate levels of care.
- Provide crisis assessment and treatment alongside clinical staff, including support and safety planning.
- Engage in care coordination with clients, families, treatment teams, and community agencies.
- Explore various departmental services and tools to enhance mental health treatment quality.
- Maintain timely, accurate documentation of all services provided.
- Complete required trainings and competency reviews.
- Participate in weekly individual or group supervision and maintain ongoing communication with supervisors.
- Commit to continuous development of therapy skills and evidence-based practices.
Minimum Knowledge and Skills:
- Familiarity with diverse theoretical treatments and practical applications.
- Ability to work effectively with a broad age range and diverse life circumstances.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficiency in telehealth platforms and documentation software.
Preferred Knowledge and Skills:
- Experience managing treatment plans and collaborating with treatment teams.
- Training in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, or other evidence-based treatments.

Minimum Education and Experience:
- Currently enrolled in a master's level mental health clinical program and working toward internship hour completion under accredited supervision.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Three to five years of experience diagnosing and treating serious and persistent mental illness (SPMI), serious mental illness (SMI), or serious emotional disturbance (SED) populations.
- Experience integrating care with other providers and working with diverse, high-risk client populations.
Required Licenses and Certifications:
- Completion of all necessary trainings for specialized care delivery, including qualifications as a Qualified Mental Health Professional (QMHP).
- Successful background checks.
- Valid driver's license.
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
- Substance Use Disorder licensure.
