Overview

The Certified Welder is responsible for executing structural welding processes in all required positions to support industrial maritime maintenance and barge repair operations. Working on drydocked vessels, this professional must pass certification testing, maintain welding apparatuses, perform structural inspections, and adhere to rigid safety protocols. The role requires working under minimal supervision and collaborating directly with fitting crews and leadership on the deck.

Job Specifications

Key Responsibilities

• Multi-Position Welding : Weld in horizontal, vertical, and overhead orientations using both electrodes (SMAW/stick) and wire (GMAW/mig) processes across all areas of barge repair (with the exception of overhead plate butt seams).
• Equipment Maintenance : Maintain wire feeder units independently, including changing wire reels, replacing tips or nozzles, and clearing fouled or jammed wire.
• Leads & Grounding Quality : Maintain active welding leads and ensure proper electrical grounding techniques are continuously utilized across structural assemblies.
• Pressure Testing & Repair : Perform air pressure testing procedures on structural barge tanks to identify, track, and repair localized leaks.
• Fitter Collaboration : Assist ship fitters from time to time, take direct task guidance from the shop leadperson, and execute operations with minimal supervision once assigned.
• Safety Adherence : Strictly follow all corporate safety protocols and actively conduct designated safety contacts on the floor.

Must Have Skills / Requirements

• Welding Certifications : Must possess an active AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Certification or an equivalent certification rendering the candidate eligible to work on inspected US Coast Guard vessels.
• Testing Requirements : Must successfully pass a certified welding test in all three standard positions: horizontal, vertical, and overhead.
• Process Proficiency : Demonstrated competency in both stick (electrode) and mig (wire) welding applications.
• Physical & Environmental Stamina : Willingness and capability to work on barges raised on drydock, which includes operating in confined spaces, under barges, or in open-air conditions depending on the assignment.

Education & Experience

• High School Diploma, equivalent technical certification, or vocational training is preferred.
• Must meet all standard operational and experience criteria established for a Welder I classification in addition to advanced multi-position certification.
