Physician - Critical Care

Summary The position involves inpatient and outpatient Pulmonary Medicine and Critical Care Medicine. Qualifications United States citizenship is required. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy. Degree: Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Residency training: Physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. Approved residencies include: Residencies approved by the accreditation bodies for graduate medical education (ACGME or AOA) published for the year the residency was completed. One year of post‑medical‑school training (internship or transitional year residency) followed by two years of independent practice in the United States. Non‑U.S. residency training followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States related to the position. Exceptions: Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency programs who meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians, may only be appointed on an intermittent basis, and are not considered independent practitioners. They will have a scope of practice that allows certain restricted duties under supervision. Proficiency in spoken and written English is required. Preferred experience: Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine experience. Physical requirements: Visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, manual dexterity, and the ability to walk, sit, type, bend, pull, and push for long periods. Physical transfer of objects and donning protective equipment in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures may be required. Optional: Critical Care Medicine and Sleep Medicine board certifications are desirable. Duties Provide inpatient and/or outpatient care for Pulmonary and Critical Care patients. Attend ICU team duties and supervise and mentor residents, fellows, and medical students. Perform procedural skills including arterial puncture, EKG interpretation, arthrocentesis, abdominal paracentesis, venti puncture, nasogastric tube insertion, PFT interpretation, moderate sedation, lumbar puncture, thoracentesis, intra‑arterial line and central venous line placement, Swan‑Ganz catheter insertion, bronchoscopy (EBUS and routine), transbronchial biopsy/aspiration, chest tube insertion, and fluoroscopy equipment usage. Review, interpret, and collate diagnostic testing results to coordinate patient care, and communicate findings clearly to patients and medical personnel. Maintain timely documentation (notes and encounter forms) in accordance with facility policy. Complete all administrative work in a timely manner and share after‑hour call responsibilities with section physicians in rotation. Provide education and mentorship to medical students, residents, and fellows. Serve as a leader and/or active member on Medical Center committees as requested, exercising corporate citizenship. Provide expanded access to services via off‑normal tour or on‑call periods. Provide treatment of pulmonary diseases and disorders in an outpatient setting, and provide consultation services in an inpatient setting or emergent need. Compensation and Benefits Competitive salary with annual performance bonus and regular salary increases based on education and length of practice. Paid time off: 50-55 days per year (26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 federal holidays, and up to 5 days paid absence for CME). No physician employment contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting. Work schedule: 32 hours every two weeks (per pay period) on nights and weekends (off‑tour). Variable tours. Employment is subject to Education and Length of Practice review through a formal pay‑setting process. Education Debt Reduction Program (Student Loan Repayment) Eligible physicians must submit their EDRP application within four months of appointment. Award amounts range from $200,000, with eligibility periods of one to five years, determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application.
