Position Summary The Surgical First Assist will help expedite surgical productivity, support the education of surgical residents, 2nd assist where needed, and first assist the Surgeons when surgical Residents are not available. The surgical First Assist will provide patient care for all ages and provide leadership and direction to the perioperative team where needed. In surgery, the Surgical First Assist collaborates with the surgeon and the health care team in performing a safe operation with optimal outcomes for the patient. He/She practices in collaboration with and at the surgeon's direction during the intra-operative experience. Hours/Schedule 40 / Mon - Fri, Four (4) 10-Hour Shifts between 6:30a - 7:00p Education Graduate from an accredited Surgical First Assist program required. License/Certification Certification as a Surgical First Assist (CSFA) or equivalent required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Experience 2+ years of experience in a surgical setting, preferably in orthopedics required. Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Knowledge of state and federal regulations and guidelines regarding surgical practices required. Strong knowledge of surgical procedures and instrumentation, especially in orthopedics. Excellent hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity. Ability to work efficiently under pressure in a fast-paced environment. Strong communication and interpersonal skills. Attention to detail and a commitment to patient safety. Problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Ability to maintain composure and professionalism in stressful situations. Knowledge of aseptic and sterile techniques. Ability to stand for long periods and handle physically demanding tasks. Essential Job Functions Assist surgeons during operative and invasive procedures. Ensure all surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies are available and functioning. Maintain sterile technique and environment throughout the surgical procedure. Provide patient care before, during, and after surgery, including positioning the patient, draping, and wound closure. Monitor patient vital signs and respond to surgical team requests promptly. Assist with patient transfer and positioning in the operating room. Participate in surgical counts with the circulating nurse to account for all instruments, sponges, and needles. Educate and communicate with patients and their families about the surgical procedure and post-operative care. Collaborate with the surgical team to ensure effective communication and workflow. Follow hospital policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Assist with training and mentoring new staff as required. Potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and other infectious materials. Requirement to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) as per hospital policy. Other duties as assigned. Physical requirements This position is classified as Medium Work in the Dictionary of Occupational Titles, requiring the exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work. Background and Physical/Drug Screening Requirements Must be able to pass background check. We also conduct pre-employment physical and drug testing. Any job offer will be contingent upon successful completion of a pre-employment physical with a drug screen, background check and obtaining active licensures per job requirements.
