This position is responsible for cleaning equipment; performing basic maintenance of equipment, grounds, and facilities; performing manual labor; assisting with projects that require semi-skilled labor; providing customer service; and keeping records and reporting maintenance needs to higher authority that fall outside of the scope of the work assigned.Duties/ResponsibilitiesPerforming vehicle pre/post trip inspections; monitoring and replenishing fluids; performing basic corrective repairsAssisting with asphalt, concrete, stormwater and street cleaning operations and/or projectsOperating pavement breakers; jumping jack tampers; pneumatic, air and electric drills; jackhammersPerforming manual labor on projects by assisting in excavation work by hand digging ditches and trenches; backfilling; compacting and leveling earth to required grade; construction landscapingAssisting with traffic control device installation and flagging operations for stationary and moving work zonesAssisting crews by handling materials and cleaning debris or hazards from worksitesAssisting with vehicle and equipment maintenance by inspecting; greasing; cleaning interior and exterior; checking fluid levels and filling as requiredSignaling operators to facilitate alignment, movement and adjustment of machinery, equipment and materialsTransporting vehicles to/from repair facilitiesSubmitting neat and complete written and/or electronic records including times sheets, maintenance history report forms, pre/post trip inspection forms and other cost records as needed.Checking and cleaning basinsUtilizing performance management system to document own work progress and performancePerforming other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.Minimum Qualifications & ExperienceHigh School Diploma or GED equivalent.One year of related experience operating tools used in maintenance.NC Class C Driver's License required.Additional Preferred SkillsCDL is not required but is preferred.Familiar with rebuilding manhole/basins, placing structures and cleaning of pipes and culverts.Ability to operate tamp.Experience working outdoors in various weather conditions.Knowledge of materials, methods, and the tools involved in the construction or repair of roadways.Position designated as a Group 1, meaning it is critical to emergency operations and must be able to report to work in spite of or because of an emergency or disaster event.Subject to stand-by/recall and after hours work.Able to operate service truck and/or dump truck outfitted with plow based upon class of license possessed during winter weather operations.Benefits – General Full-Time Employees12-13 paid holidays per year13 standard work days of vacation per year13 standard work days of sick leave per year, which accumulates indefinitely; sick leave may be used toward early retirement2 weeks paid military leave per yearMedical, dental, vision, and supplemental life insurance plansState and City retirement plansShort and long term disability plansPaid temporary disability leave for specified conditionsCity contribution of 13.6% into the N.C.
