Position Overview The Excavation Foreperson is responsible for planning, supervising, and coordinating daily excavation and earthwork operations on construction projects. This role leads field crews engaged in excavation, trenching, grading, utility installation support, backfill operations, compaction, site preparation, and material placement while ensuring work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications. The Excavation Foreperson serves as the primary field leader for assigned crews and works closely with the Superintendent to achieve production, quality, safety, and cost objectives. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong leadership, technical earthwork knowledge, and a commitment to CRH's safety-first culture. Essential Duties And Responsibilities Safety Promote and enforce all CRH safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Conduct daily safety meetings, job hazard analyses, and TRACK discussions with crews. Ensure all crew members are properly trained and equipped for assigned tasks. Identify hazards and implement corrective actions to minimize risk to employees, subcontractors, and the public. Maintain compliance with OSHA, MSHA (where applicable), and company safety standards. Lead by example in fostering a culture of safety and accountability. Site Operations & Crew Leadership Participate in project handoff meetings and review project scope, plans, specifications, and schedules. Supervise and coordinate daily excavation and site development activities. Establish daily production goals and communicate expectations to crew members. Coordinate labor, equipment, materials, and subcontractors to meet project objectives. Manage utility locating requirements, permitting processes, and Blue Stakes/811 updates as required. Monitor project progress and communicate production status, challenges, and solutions to the Superintendent. Train, mentor, and develop crew members on proper construction methods, equipment operation, and safety practices. Ensure work is performed in accordance with project plans, specifications, and company quality standards. Quality Control Verify grades, elevations, slopes, and layout prior to and during construction activities. Ensure proper compaction, trench preparation, backfill placement, and site grading procedures are followed. Inspect completed work to ensure compliance with project requirements. Address and correct quality deficiencies in a timely manner. Maintain accurate production and quality documentation. Equipment Management Ensure all equipment receives required pre-operation and post-operation inspections. Monitor equipment condition and ensure proper operation and care by all crew members. Coordinate routine maintenance and submit equipment repair requests as needed. Ensure equipment is properly secured, parked, and protected at the end of each shift. Assist with equipment mobilization and demobilization activities. Administrative & Reporting Accurately complete and submit daily reports, time records, production tracking, and project documentation. Utilize company-approved software and reporting systems to document labor, equipment, materials, and production quantities. Review project performance, costs, and production goals with the Superintendent on a regular basis. Coordinate material procurement through established purchasing processes. Assist with maintaining project records and supporting project closeout activities. Perform other duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities Directly supervises approximately 5 to 10 field employees. Provides daily work direction, coaching, training, and performance feedback. Promotes teamwork, accountability, and a positive work environment. Assists in workforce planning and crew development efforts. Minimum of 3 to 5 years of excavation, earthwork, utility, or heavy civil construction experience required. Previous crew leadership, lead operator, or foreperson experience preferred. Experience reading and interpreting construction plans, grades, and specifications. Knowledge of excavation safety practices, trenching requirements, and utility coordination processes. Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities Strong leadership and communication skills. Ability to effectively manage crews, equipment, and production schedules. Working knowledge of excavation, grading, compaction, and site development operations. Ability to read construction drawings, grade stakes, and site plans. Strong problem-solving and decision-making capabilities. Basic computer and mobile device proficiency for reporting and documentation. Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with project management. Certificates, Licenses, and Requirements Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record. OSHA 10-hour or OSHA 30-hour certification preferred. First Aid/CPR certification preferred. Ability to meet applicable pre-employment screening requirements.
