Overview Salary: $61,111 per year. Job Type: Contract. Working experience: No Experience. Customs and Border Protection Officer (CBPO) – a law enforcement career within U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Protect American interests, secure borders, enforce customs, immigration, and agriculture laws. Duties Typical assignments include: Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations. Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel. Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances. Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States. Preventing illegal entry of individuals, prohibited goods, smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband. Duty Locations Primary duty locations include Anchorage, AK; Douglas, Lukeville, Nogales, San Luis, AZ; Calexico, Otay Mesa, San Francisco, San Ysidro, Tecate, CA; Washington, D.C.; Key West, Florida; Miami, FL; Honolulu, HI; Chicago, IL; various Maine towns; Michigan towns; Minnesota towns; Montana towns; New York towns; North Dakota towns; Vermont towns; Washington towns. Locations are subject to operational and mission requirements. Compensation & Recruitment Incentives Annual base salary for newly appointed CBPOs (GS‑9) ranges from $61,111 to $124,443, varying by duty location. Locality pay applies. Fully trained CBPOs may earn up to $45,000 in overtime pay. Current service contract incentive: up to $15,000 per year for a three‑year contract in selected locations and up to $15,000 per year for a four‑year contract in other selected locations. Training The role requires completion of a paid pre‑academy orientation (~2 weeks) at the home port, followed by a 101‑day CBP Field Operations Academy at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. Selected duty locations may require an online Spanish training program. Successful completion of the academy is mandatory. Qualifications Minimum of one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS‑7 (e.g., law enforcement, customs enforcement, intelligence analysis). Experience may include detaining, arresting, enforcing import/export regulations, risk assessment, and interview procedures. Educational substitution: Master’s degree or higher, or two or more years of graduate education leading to such a degree; or LL.B. or J.D. from an accredited institution. Combination of experience and postgraduate education. Eligibility Requirements U.S. citizenship. At least three years of primary U.S. residency within the last five years.
