Interior Designer - Mission Critical / Data Center Specialized
Chicago, IL; Pittsburgh, PA; Remote - United States
We seek to move the world forward through innovative thinking.
Woolpert is an award-winning, global leader in architecture, engineering, and geospatial services. We blend design excellence with cutting-edge technology to deliver exceptional client value. Our team is passionate about their work and committed to building the next generation of industry leaders, and as a certified Great Place to Work®, Woolpert embraces progress and innovation to create limitless opportunities for career growth.
Woolpert is hiring an Interior Designer to join our Interiors Discipline supporting our dynamic Mission Critical / Data Center practice. This position reports to the Interiors Discipline Team Leader and will play a key role in the design, planning, and delivery of highly technical workplace interior environments within mission critical and data center facilities.
This role includes developing interior design concepts, producing design documentation and high-quality renderings, and collaborating closely with the architectural team to ensure a fully integrated design approach. The position requires advanced expertise in interior systems, materials, detailing, and coordination—particularly where interiors intersect with complex infrastructure, MEP systems, and operational requirements.
You will serve as a trusted technical and design resource, working collaboratively with project managers, architects, designers, and consulting partners to support design quality and successful project outcomes. This role requires the ability to engage effectively with experienced professionals, contribute to integrated architectural and interior design solutions, and communicate clearly through all phases of design and delivery.
The Designer III leads significant portions of complex projects and provides day-to-day guidance and direction to more junior interior designers, supporting their technical development, design execution, and understanding of firm standards and best practices. This role contributes to technical standards, supports quality control throughout project delivery, and actively participates in cross-disciplinary design coordination. In addition to technical excellence, this position is designed for a designer who demonstrates clear leadership potential—someone who shows interest and aptitude in mentoring others, guiding teams, and developing strong people-management skills over time.
This position is ideal for a technically and creatively driven interior designer who thrives in mission critical environments, values collaboration with architectural partners, and is ready to grow as an emerging design leader within the firm.
We are unable to provide visa sponsorship for this position. Applicants must already possess work authorization in the country the job is located.
What You Will Do:
- Oversee specific technical aspects of interior projects, from assessment through coordinated solutions and documentation.
- Provide professional consultation during planning and execution phases of projects, supporting design intent and project outcomes.
- Independently apply advanced interior design concepts and develop improved methods, tools, and solutions as needed.
- Guide less experienced staff and may manage portions of project teams, support mentorship and knowledge sharing.
- Analyze complex design issues and develop actionable insights and recommendations.
- Maintain robust communication with all project stakeholders to ensure coordination, quality, and consistency.
- Participate in marketing initiatives to promote the firm, as assigned.
Personal & Professional Growth
This role represents a key transition toward advanced technical leadership and professional influence. Designer III professionals continue to deepen their expertise while expanding their impact through mentorship, technical decision-making, and leadership of significant project components. This position prepares individuals for senior design and specialized leadership roles within the firm.
At Woolpert we place a high value on personal and professional growth, offering various opportunities for development within the architectural team:
- Team members have access to continuous learning programs, including workshops, seminars, certifications, and participation in professional membership organizations. This allows our interior designers to stay abreast of the latest industry trends and technologies, broaden their expertise, and network with industry peers.
- Mentorship programs, providing invaluable insights and fostering a culture of knowledge sharing.
- Career advancement through personalized career path planning and regular performance evaluations, ensuring that each team member's progress is recognized and rewarded.
- Opportunities to take on new challenges, lead projects, and expand skill sets, further enhancing personal and professional capabilities.
What You Will Bring:
- Bachelor's degree in interior architecture or interior design (or equivalent)
- 5 years of professional experience in interior design or a related field.
- Advanced proficiency with design and modeling software (e.g., Revit, Miro, Enscape, Adobe Creative Suite) and strong documentation / presentation capability.
- Proven leadership and mentorship abilities; experience managing complex or large-scale project components.
- NCIDQ certified (interest in earning additional specialty certifications is preferred as well)
