ArtCenter College of Design is searching for an experienced Shop Assistant to join our team.


The salary range for this position: $22.00 - 24.00 per hour.

Job Summary The Shop Assistant's responsibilities involve issuing toolsand selling materials. It requires the fielding of questions from students onmaterials and procedures while guiding them on the safe use of shop hand tools.These tasks are often carried out simultaneously, so the ability to multitaskis necessary. Incumbunt will be assigned to one primary shift but must be ableto work any shift and at either campus location.

Essential Functions
Tool Checkoutand Material Sales - 50%

• Issuing in andout of tools and materials using web checkout
• Retail salesincluding the use of a cash register and computer

Inventory - 20%

• Keeping trackof inventory and reordering when needed
• Restockinginventory items and ordering supplies as needed

Shop Education- 5%

• Provideinstruction to students in the proper utilization of hand tools, composites,stock materials and aerosols
• Provideprovisional support and guidance for any students who enter the shop
• Provideconstructive feedback, sourcing materials, and positive reinforcement tostudents

Shop Safety -20%

• Maintain a safeand clean work environment throughout the department
• Comply andensure that safety and dress codes are carried out in accordance with shoppolicies, including wearing assigned PPE
• Attend requiredtraining sessions on assigned PPE and EHS provided by the College
• Optionalopportunity: Opt-in for First Responder training for injuries, blood, andbodily fluid clean-up, as well as Emergency Responder management to enhanceyour skills and qualify for a wage increase
• Familiarizeyourself with basic first aid procedures and be prepared to assist in case ofminor injuries or accidents, if trained and opted in
• Attend safetymeetings and training sessions to stay updated on safety practices, emergencyresponse procedures, and blood and bodily fluid clean-up, if opted in
• Report anyaccidents or safety concerns to the supervisor and actively participate inincident documentation

Non-Essential -5%

• Help with theunloading and stocking of stock and raw materials in the Model Shop and fromthe loading dock
• Other relatedduties, as may be assigned

Physical Demands and Working Environment The conditions herein are representative of those that mustbe met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of thisjob. Environment: Work is performed primarily in a shop settingwith frequent interruptions and distractions; extended periods of time usingshop equipment including computers, viewing computer monitors, shop equipmentetc.; interactions with other individuals. Due to the nature of the workenvironment, there is exposure to loud noises, chemicals, fumes, dust and heat.

Full-time positions work 35 hours; part-time positions workless than 30 hours each week on average. Staff operating in a normal scheduleof Monday through Friday; with the possibility of nights and weekends asneeded. Part-time positions operate within this timeframe. The position is tobe performed on-site as a condition of employment.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physicalability and mobility to work in an shop setting; to stand or walk for prolongedperiods of time; including, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, squatting,and twisting; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight (50 pounds, or team-lift upto 100 pounds); to operate office and shop equipment requiring repetitive handmovement and fine coordination, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; andto verbally communicate to exchange information. Regular and consistentattendance are required for most positions.

Vision: Must be able to have the visual capacity to performactivities such as setting up equipment, viewing a computer terminal and othernormal technician work with or without correction.
Hearing: Must be able to communicate effectively in thecourse of normal business communication or exchange ideas with or withoutcorrection

Required Qualifications:

• Customerservice and cashiering experience required
• Some experienceusing basic wood and metal working tools
• Proficientcomputer literacy
• Excellentinterpersonal and communication skills necessary for customer service,including the patience and understanding required to work with students daily
• Basic knowledgeof Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) compliance requirements includinghazardous chemicals and hazardous waste management
• Self-starterwith good multi-tasking skills; highly organized, able to work with minimalsupervision
• Ability to workwell in a multi-ethnic and multi-cultural environment with students, facultyand staff with varying degrees of skills and backgrounds
• Available towork weeknights and some weekends

Preferred Qualifications

• Experienceusing large power tools
• Priorexperience in higher education
• Operateforklift and pallet jacks
