PURPOSE OF POSITION: To open and close store. Manage and operate a Goodwill Retail store while fulfilling Goodwill's mission statement.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED: District Store and Asst. Store Manager
SUPERVISION EXERCISED: Supervises workers in various personnel groups engaged in operating a retail store.
QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION:
- High school education or the equivalent required.
- Must have full knowledge of bookkeeping and accounting to maintain sales records and reports incidental to store operations. Must be a person with excellent character references and a well-developed sense of responsibility.
- Must have a valid driver’s license and be insurable.

JOB COMPETENCIES: Will handle customer complaints. Oversees store operation including inventory, warehouse and stock rotation in absent of all other management team. Will perform the basic store reports. Provides supervision for all sales associates and follows cash handling procedures on a daily basis.
As a member of the management staff, sets an example for his or her workers. Personal conduct must reflect the high standards of integrity expected of all Goodwill staff personnel. Is expected to exercise good judgement in handling the wide variety of day-to-day operational problems which arise continuously in store operation. Must be thoroughly familiar and continually stress the Goodwill sales philosophy. Performs those duties which are part of every day supervisory job. In addition, is responsible for and either does or supervises the following:
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Supervises the sales force and Sales Floor. Sells merchandise as time permits. Attends to and satisfies customer’s needs. Handles customer complaints in a fair and impartial manner, coordinating as necessary. Promotes special events.
- Receives and checks incoming stock and supervises checkouts and stock transfers. Checks condition and placement of stock in a clean, neat, and orderly condition. Suggests and maintains displays and advertising ideas and prepares and places signs in sales areas and Windows's solely responsible for wares dept. being clean, stocked and rotated on a daily basis. Must make sure merchandise is being marked to Goodwill Standards from the processing warehouse area.
- Supervises store personnel and maintains projected sales goals.
- Represents Goodwill in the area served, striving to enhance the Goodwill image through individual and group participation.
- Maintain records of store operations as required. Reviews and analyzes sales to determine effectiveness of methods used and adequacy of prices. Make recommendations to Area Manager and Vice President of Operations/Sales.
- To help keep the store clean and attractive
- To perform all administrative and record keeping duties as required in store manager’s and/or assistant manager’s absence, including but not limited to preparing store report, making daily deposit, maintaining employee purchase forms.
- Sorts clothing and textiles items. Bends or stoops to reach into bags or boxes which are 48” to 6’ off the floor to remove individual textile items. Manually removes hangers, straight pins, labels from textiles items when required. Visually and tacitly inspects items. Judges whether or not item is salable using criteria established by company policy and procedure. Places unassailable items (salvage) into appropriate container which may be movable carts or plastic bags. Reaches into carts as deep as 36”. Lifts textile items as high as 48” onto table. Sort number and quality to textile items as specified by departmental procedure and policy.
- Hangs clothing items as soon as quality has been established. Visually inspects item to determine appropriate type of hanger. Reaches with one arm to obtain correct plastic hanger between 9” and 15” long-which may or may not have metal clips. Places item on hanger as required by departmental procedure. Manually buttons, zips, or otherwise fastens item as appropriate, according to departmental procedure. Turns around to place hung item on rack approximately 60” high.
- Visually inspects clothing racks on sales floor. Judges which racks are too full. Stands beside racks that are 50 to 60 inches long. Reaches with arms to remove clothing items on hangers that are soiled, torn, or unsaleable. Manually removes hangers from clothing items and places hanger into container which is approximately 12 to 24 inches from the floor. Stands in front of bin table which is approximately 40” high. Sorts through clothing items in carts, plastic bags, or other containers. Moves containers weighing as much as 25 pounds to salvage area as far as 75 feet.
- Pushes rolling rack approximately 60” high and 72” long of hanging clothing items as far as 50 feet to sales floor. Reaches with arms to remove clothing items on appropriate racks on sales floor as determined by company policy and procedure.
- Cleans wares shelves which are approximately 60” and, in sections, 4’ wide. Dusts shelves, manually removes broken, soiled, or otherwise unsaleable items and places in trash containers which may be barrels 36” high or boxes from 12 to 24 inches high. Moves containers to area designated for trash in the production which may be as far as 75 feet from the sales floor.
- Reaches into carts or boxes 12 to 40 inches from the floor. Manually removes wares and electrical items weighing less than 1 to 15 pounds. Places item on shelves from floor level to 60” high. Places ties, belts, purses on specially designed fixtures according to departmental policy and procedure. Pushes empty carts back to production area as far as 75 feet from sales floor.
- Answers telephone. Answers customer questions about basic store operations, such as hours open, merchandise available, but refers other requisitions to store manager.
- Assists individuals making donations of a variety of miscellaneous items contained in bags, boxes, on hangers, or loose or donated as single items. Donations may weigh as little as one pound and up to more than 40 pounds. Accepts donations handed by donor or walks to donor’s vehicle and removes donations from vehicle.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assures that the appearance of the store and premises is presentable at all times.
- Performs administrative and clerical details of store operation, such as; ordering, receiving, and disposing of mail, handling cash as directed by current procedures, etc.
- Responsible for safety and well-being for all employees.
- Safeguards the premises and material under his or her care at all times. Seeks to reduce the possibility of pilferage or burglary. Constantly watches for fire hazards and unsafe conditions.
- Greets customers.
- Adhere to all ethical standards confidentiality of records.
- Adhere to all safety policies and reports violations.
- Attend required meetings as required.
- Support mission statement and activities of other departments.
- Support the accessibility of our services and facilities free of architectural, attitudinal, environmental, financial, communication, transportation, employment and other barriers to person with disabilities and barriers to employment.
- Must be able to work Saturdays and Sundays and at least two nights a week.
- Must be able to count all monies for store operations.
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must be able to make bank deposits with own transportation daily.
- When working with monies, safe and monies must be locked up at all times.
- Driving to the bank to ensure secure delivery of bank deposits.
- Other duties as assigned.

RELATIONS WITH STORE PERSONNEL: Follows program plan in work assignments. Represents management to them. Advises and counsels them as required. Is fair and impartial in his/her relations with them.
RELATIONS WITH STORE COSTUMERS: Is uniformly courteous to them. Listens to any complaints and attempts to adjust within policy to the satisfaction of the customer when merchandise is defective. Uses good judgement and does not hesitate to take responsibility. Stresses courtesy and enthusiasm to the public by all store workers.
RELATIONS WITH STORE MANAGER AND AREA MANAGER: Keeps him/her informed of significant events. Recommends changes in policies and procedures based on store operations. Is particularly sensitive to management requests and adheres to deadlines and due dates.
NOTE: Must have a telephone and maintain it in operating order within telephone company's maintenance capabilities. Must be a licensed driver-must be insurable. Must pass/complete background check.
PHYSICAL STRENGTH:
