Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography)

Summary The Medical Instrument Technician (Telemetry Technician) interprets telemetry rhythms – monitors the patient’s continuous EKG and pulse oximetry waveforms in a centralized station located within the 3B North Tele nursing unit – sets alarm parameters per primary provider orders – and notifies the appropriate clinical staff as indicated. The telemetry technician is expected to perform job duties independently and in accordance with established departmental and hospital policies and procedures. Qualifications Grade Determinations: GS‑5 Medical Instrument Technician (Trainee) – requires at least one year of comparable experience and knowledge of standard medical terminology, ability to operate and maintain equipment, and ability to learn normal and abnormal results for routine procedures. Education: either four academic years above high school leading to a bachelor’s degree with relevant coursework, or a bachelor’s degree in an appropriate major field of study. Grade Determinations: GS‑6 Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography) – requires at least one year of comparable experience and knowledge of heart anatomy, cardiac arrhythmias, cardiac ultrasound physics, and ability to set up and operate equipment for routine procedures. Certification: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) is desirable. Grade Determinations: GS‑7 Medical Instrument Technician (Echocardiography) – requires at least one year of comparable experience and ability to conduct transthoracic echocardiograms in all views, with color flow and Doppler. Certification: Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certifications are desirable. Preferred Skills for Monitor Telemetry Technicians Technical skills: ECG interpretation, understanding of cardiac physiology, ability to operate telemetry monitoring equipment, alarm management. Clinical & documentation skills: accurate charting, reporting abnormal findings, adherence to protocols. Interpersonal & communication skills: teamwork, clear communication, patient sensitivity. Cognitive & organizational skills: attention to detail, multitasking, problem‑solving. Certifications & education: high school diploma or GED, basic life support, telemetry certification. Duties Duties include but are not limited to: Telemetry interpretation & monitoring, chart review for significant history, pacer – AICD – arrhythmias – diagnosis and pertinence for rhythm disturbances, monitoring parameters per primary provider orders. Change alarm parameters per primary provider orders; monitor, interpret, and record rhythms for patients on TELE units, including PR, QT, QRS, ST as designated. Report and record all changes in heart rate/rhythm; immediately report lethal and potentially lethal arrhythmias; complete admission, discharge, transfer procedures on the GE telemetry system PRN. Color code patient’s monitor tracing to reflect cardiac and resuscitation status. Works closely with the Biomed team to report and troubleshoot system maintenance issues. Maintain a clean work area and equipment. Act as mentor or preceptor to lower‑graded technicians; conduct in‑service training on EKG equipment. Collaborate on unit‑based and hospital‑wide continuous monitoring workflow improvements. Maintain spreadsheet tool for patient movement, shift events, and nursing communications; use tool for shift report. Communicate effectively with staff at varying grade levels; provide shift reports verbally or in writing. Escalate communication to charge nurse and/or primary provider if staff unavailable; request renewal of continuous monitoring orders. May rotate and operate instruments used to record electrocardiograms, exercise tolerance tests, 24‑48 hr monitoring, pacemaker evaluations as needed. Other related duties may be assigned. Work schedule: varies – e.g., 3:30 pm‑12:00 am, 11:30 pm‑8:00 am. Functional Statement: GS0649‑05 to GS0649‑07. Relocation/recruitment incentives: Not authorized.
