Job Title Director of Exceptional Children Job Description The Director of the Exceptional Children’s Program provides leadership to the district’s programs for exceptional children, including Homebound services. The role involves motivating, influencing, and shaping individuals to ensure continuous organizational development and improvement. Responsibilities include planning, curriculum and instruction, policy, community relations, personnel practices, and fiscal management. The Director administers the program in compliance with local, state, and federal guidelines, regulations, and laws. Reports To Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Responsibilities Provide administrative support for programs and services for exceptional children Pre‑K to Grade 12. Prepare budget and administer funds per federal, state, and local policies. Supervise district‑wide Exceptional Children’s Program staff. Provide professional development for Program staff. Project annual allotments of licensed and support staff, assist in hiring personnel. Recommend and prepare contracts for related services (physical therapy, occupational therapy, psychological services, speech therapy, health services, audiology, etc.). Establish new programs as directed by the state and as needs arise. Collaborate with community agencies such as Group Homes, Smart Start, TEACCH, Mental Health, etc. Participate in IEP/Placement meetings when necessary. Submit federal and state applications for program approval. Perform student observations and provide assistance through school and classroom site visits. Facilitate data collection and documentation compliance within electronic data systems. Research grants, entitlements, and allocations from federal and state governments. Evaluate school requests for federal/state monies. Ensure all student records comply with required procedures. Manage equipment and instructional supplies budgets. Provide accurate student headcounts Pre‑K‑12 Grade when required. Stay current on all applicable laws and re‑authorizations. Plan and coordinate district‑wide activities. Prepare mid‑year and annual reports for NC DPI. Supervise the district Homebound Program. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Master’s degree in Education or related field and 3 to 6 years of experience as a program administrator (or equivalent combination of training and experience). Certification as an Exceptional Child Program Administrator preferred. Master’s degree preferred. Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
