About the Position:

This role is an on-campus, in-person position. The focus of the Assistant Athletic Trainer is to promote and protect the health and well-being of intercollegiate student-athletes. The primary role of the is to provide services that address the education, prevention, assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries. The assistant athletic trainer will have duties and responsibilities that support and provide care to all Division-1 varsity student-athletes with an emphasis on equestrian. Additional sport/administrative duties may be assigned/determined by the Associate Athletic Director of Student Health and Well-being. The role of the assistant athletic trainer is vital in supporting the mission and values of the SMU Athletic Department. While working within the scope of state and national regulations and guidelines, the athletic trainer will also provide significant contributions towards safety and risk management.

Essential Functions:

• Education, prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.
• Medical record keeping, documentation, and injury tracking / monitoring.
• Various administrative duties to support the operations of the sports medicine program.
• Traveling with respective teams to provide care and support while on the road for competition. May also need to travel to attend continuing education events.
• Working weekends to provide coverage for competitions and practices. The athletics schedule is ever changing and as a result candidate must be able to adapt to schedule demands.
• Work through a variety of weather and environmental conditions, long hours, and hands-on assignments that can provide physical demands may be necessary at times.

Qualifications:

Education and Experience: Master's degree is required, preferably in Sports Medicine or Athletic Training. A minimum of one (1) year of work experience is required. Experience with women's equestrian is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Candidate must demonstrate strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate broadly across the University and develop and maintain effective relationships with a wide range of constituencies. Must also be an effective communicator through email. Candidate must possess strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify and analyze problems, as well as devise solutions. Must also have strong organizational, planning and time management skills. Candidate must have a basic or functional working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Must also have the ability to learn and utilize injury documentation and tracking software. An NATA-BOC Certification is required. A Texas License (or eligibility for) as an Athletic Trainer is required. Certification(s) in AED, CPR and First Aid is required. Other related or relevant certifications (EMT, Dry Needling, CES, PES, BFR, Graston Technique, etc.) are preferred.
