School Custodian

The job of Custodian (Day or Night) was established for the purpose of maintaining an attractive, sanitary and safe facility for students, staff and public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities, and events; and performing minor repairs and preventive maintenance; and minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure. Reports to: School Principal. Supervises: None

Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

• Arranges furnishings and equipment for providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and special events.
• Cleans school facilities for maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment at the school.
• Completes employer required training for maintaining current knowledge regarding specific job and/or diocesan, state and federal rules, regulations, policies and procedures and laws.
• Distributes supplies, equipment and/or mail for disseminating materials to appropriate parties and/or locations.
• Executes minor repairs for ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition.
• Informs students, staff, and visitors for providing information regarding activities, safety and/or proper maintenance of facilities.
• Inspects school facilities for ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in an attractive and clean condition, and/or identifying/reporting necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage, weather conditions, etc.
• Maintains supplies and equipment for ensuring the availability of items required to properly stock facilities.
• Oversees students assigned to cafeteria or other duties for ensuring students receive appropriate instruction, direction and oversight while volunteering and/or assigned to cafeteria detail.
• Prepares facility for daily operations for ensuring facilities are operational and safe for occupancy.
• Provides assistance to others to schedule the facilities for ensuring facility usage is accurately scheduled and providing assistance and information to those requesting use of facilities.
• Helps respond to immediate safety and/or operational concerns for taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning physical and educational environment.
• Secures facilities and grounds for minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability to the district.
• Attends in-service training for receiving information on new and/or improved procedures.
• Services job-related machinery/equipment for maintaining equipment in good working condition.
• Assists other personnel as may be required for ensuring an efficient and effective work environment.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Skills are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in industrial maintenance including electrical cleaning equipment, common tools, etc.; and adhering to safety practices. Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods of industrial cleaning; and safety practices and procedures. Ability is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; collate data; and consider a number of factors when using equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; and working as part of a team. Physical requirements: The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: significant lifting up to 30 pounds unassisted for the purpose of lifting equipment necessary to complete assigned tasks, occasionally may need to lift up to 75lbs, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing using ladders and/or scaffolding for the purpose of cleaning, changing light bulbs, replacing ceiling tiles, etc.; frequent stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling; and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 5% sitting, 90% walking, and 5% standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Educational Requirements: Job related experience is desired and less than high school GED acceptable. Valid PA Driver's License required and Evidence of Insurability CPR/First Aid Certificate, Blood Borne Pathogen Training
