As the Fleet Services Manager, you will have the opportunity to apply your Senior level Fleet Mechanic experience and advanced mechanical, diagnostic, and leadership skills to a fleet that serves the community every day. This is a high-impact, mission-critical position for seasoned professionals dedicated to excellence in emergency vehicle maintenance.
An Ambulance Mechanic is a specialized professional responsible for maintaining the mechanical integrity and operational readiness of emergency medical service vehicles. At the senior level, this position demands mastery of both mechanical systems and the integrated emergency equipment unique to ambulances. These professionals perform advanced diagnostics, oversee shop workflow, manage parts inventory, and mentor less-experienced mechanics ensuring that every ambulance meets the highest standards of safety and reliability.
The Fleet Services Manager is a qualified and experienced mechanic that assists with the leadership of preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs for the company. Proactively managing repairs needed for vehicles, stretchers, generators, and other equipment maintained by Fleet Services. This position will provide supervision of Fleet staff and is a hands-on manager that assists in establishing and maintaining a safe environment, and efficient and productive work practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Ensures the timely and efficient management of maintenance and mechanical repairs for the Cataldo Fleet.
- Lead the performance of advanced diagnostics, repairs on engines, electrical and hydraulic systems.
- Maintain and repair emergency equipment, lighting systems, oxygen systems, and vehicle mounted electronics.
- Use OEM and advanced diagnostic software to troubleshoot complex issues.
- Troubleshooting, diagnosing, and performing mechanical repairs and maintenance on company fleet vehicles including wheelchair vans, and ambulances for both. Maintenance and repair of stretchers, generators, and other equipment maintained by Fleet Services
- Conduct and documents vehicle inspections and certification related maintenance.
- Ensures fleet is performing preventative maintenance in a timely manner to reduce breakdowns and costs.
- Laison between fleet services, the fleet director and operational managers regarding concerns, and proactively facilitating solutions with services or equipment.
- Collaborate with the Fleet Services Director on fleet planning, workflow and quality assurance.
- Ensuring timely notification to operations or facilities of any equipment that needs to be re-stocked or replaced.
- Assist with leadership, guidance and direction for fleet staff. Creating and maintaining reports and communicating with other departments to ensure clear documentation and flow of information.
- Maintaining a pleasant and professional work environment is being promoted between fleet staff, other departments, internal and external customers and vendors.
- Proactively exploring opportunities to add value, time efficiencies and increase productivity.
- Evaluates needs of the department, researching solutions and presenting recommendations for financial and departmental consideration.
- Managing employee scheduling and coverage.
- Participates in the hiring process, promotions, and progressive disciplinary action.
- Participates in and assists in the performance evaluation process.
- Ensure newly hired staff receive proper training and meet compliance, leading and mentoring junior mechanics, providing technical guidance and oversight.
- Ensure compliance with CAAS GVS and state regulatory maintenance standards
- Ensuring compliance with OSHA, company safety requirements and standards.
- Assist in keeping vehicle locations and moves updated on vehicle status board
- Completes Quality Control review for vehicles after scheduled maintenance or repairs
- Perform roadside repairs and or vehicles inspections outside of the fleet maintenance locations
- Fleet manager will act as alternate on the company safety committee and/or the Massachusetts ambulance association.
- Maintains knowledge of and complies with all company policies, procedures, and guidelines at all times.
- Must maintain a reliable attendance record
- Completes other duties as requested and assigned
Cataldo Ambulance service is a 24/7 continuous operation, and the work schedule may include working evening, nights, weekends, or holidays to support the operation and subject to recall for emergency situations.
Education:
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Technical school or associate degree in automotive or technology preferred.
Licensure, Certification, Registration:
- Current valid driver’s license
- ASE Maser Certification and EVT Level II or III strongly preferred
- Establish and maintain air conditioning certification through the Mobile Air Conditioning Society (MAS) or Automotive Service Excellence (ASE)
- Maintain Ferno Cot Care and/or applicable Certification(s)
- Management Certification through the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Certification Commission is highly desired
Experience:
- Minimum 4-6 years of experience in automotive or heavy vehicle repair.
- 2 or more years in emergency or specialty vehicle maintenance.
- Three or more years of Supervisory, senior level or lead experience in an automotive maintenance and repair and/or vehicular fleet operations
- A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent
- Working knowledge of repair garage safety
- Experience with computer systems required, including web-based applications and some Microsoft Office applications preferred.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Proven diagnostic and leadership skills in fleet or emergency vehicle operations.
- Strong knowledge of electrical and computer based vehicle systems.
- Knowledge of emergency vehicles and Ford Transmissions, E350, E450 trucks with 6.0 and motors preferred.
- Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; ability to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Analytical skills to gather and interpret data
- Ability to exercise sound judgment and discretion at all times
Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age
- Ability to meet the essential duties and physical, mental and sensory requirements of the position at all times.
- Comply with UDS drug screening at any and all times
- Satisfactory background check and MA CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information), verification required annually.
- Verification of an acceptable motor vehicle driving record, verification required annually.

Essential physical demands typically include safely lifting up to 50 lbs. unassisted, occasionally lifting up to 100 lbs. using dollies, and navigating active, loud truck environments. Ability to work in varying weather conditions and environments with exposure to heights, fumes, grease and loud noises.
