Must be able to drive and operate all types of fire and EMS apparatus. Essential Task Functions Firefighter Receives continuous classroom and field training in a wide range of fire prevention, EMT, and firefighting techniques, principles, and procedures; receives specialized training in salvage and rescue operations, emergency medical aid, civil defense, hazardous materials, disaster, drowning, and other related emergency situations; participates in drills. Responds to fire alarm signals; performs as member of firefighting team; responds to emergency calls by riding fire truck to scene of fire; manipulates various sized appliances, nozzles, hose streams; lays and connects water hose, hooks up pump, holds nozzle and directs water stream; raises and climbs ladders and utilizes other specialized equipment such as chemical fire extinguisher, SCBA, encapsulated chemical suits, power saws; operates extension ladders in actual rescue situations and regular training; uses various hand tools such as rope, axes, etc. Receives instruction on policies and procedures to conduct fire prevention inspections on various types of facilities; conducts inspections and advises resident or owner of necessary action to conform to standards; assists in performing fire scene investigations to determine "point of origin" and cause of fires; prepares and submits a variety of reports related to inspection activity. Public Relations Participates in public presentations, station tours, community events, and marketing to promote fire hazard awareness and fire prevention. Advanced AEMT Evaluates the patient's condition, injuries, accident scenes, and medical emergencies; administers aid per protocol; monitors the patient's vital signs and provides basic life support until transported to the hospital. Operates resuscitation and suction devices during cardiopulmonary resuscitation; vacuum splints, cervical collars, backboards, and various other medical devices used to immobilize patients during transport and extrication. Apply bandages and dressings on soft tissue injuries as needed to stop bleeding; apply pneumatic anti-shock pants on patients per protocol to maintain the perfusion of their vital signs; lift and carry patients from the scene to the ambulance according to established procedures. Performs related duties as required. Paramedic Performs various lead worker duties and assists in coordinating and scheduling continuing education programs, workshops, and seminars that align with Paramedic licensing requirements. Coordinate with state regulatory agencies as needed. Provides mentoring supervision to less experienced Paramedic and AEMT personnel, evaluates AEMT performance, and recommends employment status, including retention, advancement, discipline, or discharge. Responds to emergency medical calls; utilizes radio communications to receive and transmit communications; operates ambulance under emergency and customary conditions to transport emergency medical patients to healthcare facilities, hospitals, or other institutions. Evaluates the patient's condition, injuries, accident scenes, and medical emergencies; administers aid per protocol; monitors the patient's vital signs and provides basic life support until transported to the hospital. Performs advanced life support procedures such as direct laryngoscopy, endotracheal intubation (orotracheal & nasotracheal), endotracheal suctioning, translingual jet insufflation, surgical cricothyrotomy, needle thoracostomy, femoral venous access, ECG interpretation, synchronized cardioversion, defibrillation, transcutaneous cardiac placement and use of infusion pumps; administers advanced medications (e.g., adenosine, albuterol, atropine, dextrose (oral and injectable), nitroglycerine, dopamine HCI, diazepam, etc.); utilizes various advanced routes for medication administration (e.g., endotracheal, intradermal, intramuscular, intraosseous, intravenous, nebulized aerosol, parenteral, rectal, subcutaneous, sublingual, topical, etc.); monitors special medications (e.g., aminophylline, antibiotics, blood products, fibrolytic drugs, insulin, mannitol, etc.); may perform rapid sequence intubation and ipratropium bromide inhalation therapy as directed. Performs intermediate-level emergency medical procedures such as blood drawing, external jugular access, subcutaneous injections, intravenous injections, nebulized inhalations, intradermal biological testing, and immunological vaccination administrations; administers various advanced levels of medications, e.g., epinephrine, NTG7, morphine 6, glucagon 8, diphenhydramine 9, etc. Monitors potassium IV drips 4. Operates resuscitation and suction devices during cardiopulmonary resuscitation; vacuum splints, cervical collars, backboards, and other medical devices to immobilize patients during transport and extrication. Applies bandages and dressing on soft tissue injuries as needed to stop bleeding; applies pneumatic anti-shock pants on patients as per protocol to maintain perfusion of patient's vital signs; lifts and carries patients from scene to ambulance according to established procedures; performs various basic life-saving procedures such as pulse oximetry, blood glucometry, oxygen administration, ventilator applications, splinting, oropharyngeal and nasopharyngeal airway placement, combi tube placement, semi-automatic defibrillation, oral glucose administration, and approved chemical/medication administrations, assists with emergency child birth. Performs related duties as required. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience Required at the time of employment: High School Diploma, or equivalent; Must be 18 years of age; Utah State Certified Advanced-EMT or Paramedic Certifications IFSAC Firefighter I and II IFSAC Hazardous Materials Awareness IFSAC Hazardous Materials Operations Utah Advanced-EMT License or Paramedic License BLS/CPR certification Additional Certifications Must be obtained within 1 year of employment: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) NWCG Wildland Firefighter II (Red Card) NIMS 100, 200, 700, and 800 CEVO Ambulance Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Considerable knowledge of first-aid and emergency medical techniques and procedures; emergency vehicle operation; various medical procedures necessary to sustain and prolong life in the absence of a medical doctor; medical terminology; various effects of medications or the lack of the same leading to life threatening conditions firefighting methods, techniques, and procedures; firefighting equipment types and varieties and their most appropriate and effective use; equipment maintenance and care; state and city codes, laws, and regulations, and ordinances related to fire prevention; fire vehicle equipment; emergency medical techniques and procedures and first-aid; interpersonal communication skills. Some knowledge of training methods and techniques. Ability to follow detailed verbal or written work instructions; work in dangerous emergency situations; perform strenuous physical labor; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; assimilate modern fire prevention and firefighting skills; perform under extreme weather conditions; work on call and on shift work; develop effective working relationships with supervisors, fellow employees, and the public. Special Qualifications Must have and maintain a valid State of Utah driver's license or the ability to obtain one prior to employment, and be deemed insurable. Supplemental Information Work Environment Functions of the position are generally performed in a controlled environment, but are subject to all seasonal and weather extremes. Emergency responses are expected in the normal course of performing duties. Many functions of the work pose a high degree of hazard uncertainty. Physical readiness and conditioning may be a condition of job retention. Various levels of mental application are required, including memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, and creative problem-solving. Continuous use of motor skills. Employees who are required to drive a motor vehicle as part of their essential job duties are required to successfully complete a motor vehicle record (MVR) check.
