Nurses collaborate with other professional disciplines to ensure effective patient care delivery and achievement of desired patient outcomes. Nurses effectively interact with patient and significant others, while maintaining the standard of professional nursing. Registered Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. Due to the broad range of medical conditions they encounter, they must be well-verse in a large variety of health conditions.
Registered Nurses have a professional obligation to participate in committee activities, surveys and improvement initiatives. In addition, Registered Nurses must uphold the standards of the Texas Nurse Practice Act.
Emergency Department Registered Nurses provide care for patients of all ages and acuity. Patients present to the Emergency Department with a wide variety and/or combination of illnesses and injuries at varying and unpredictable paces. Emergency Department census, acuity, and surges demand continuous prioritization of both patients and nursing interventions by the Registered Nurse to maintain safe and efficient care.

Required Licenses/Certifications Registered Nurse ACLS should be completed within 90 days of hire. TNCC should be completed within 18 months of hire. PALS or ENPC should be completed within 6 months of hire. BLS - should not initiate patient contact until completed. NIHSS should be completed within 90 days of hire.

Demonstrates on-going competency (to include use of equipment involved, sterile procedure, monitoring, trouble-shooting and indications for intervention) in technical and critical skills necessary in the ED. For example, intra-osseous line placement, c-spine immobilization and in-line maintenance, splint application, wound care, chest tube management, central line management, ventriculostomy management, cardioversion, procedural sedation, bladder scanning, and IV initiation on all ages. Clearly recognizes responsibility in seeking learning opportunities to maintain comfort and familiarity with equipment, skills and procedures, as well as professional expectations of teaching such to peers as opportunities and needs arise. Recognizes the risks to patient safety and well-being occur most frequently as a result of poor communication and inadequate hand-off reports and mitigates these risks as demonstrated by bedside reporting and consistent engagement in effective, professional hand-off communication and documentation with admitted, transferred and discharged patients. Demonstrates ability to manage all levels of acuity, all types of illnesses and injuries by equally effective care in all areas of the ED. Demonstrates unique body of knowledge and understands responsibilities regarding early recognition and care management of life-threatening and altering events such as acute stroke, ACS, STEMI, sepsis, trauma, anaphylaxis, and complete heart block and how to adapt care in the pediatric population.
