Medical Laboratory Scientist II - Chemistry

Job Description Medical Laboratory Scientist II – Royal Oak, MI – Monday to Friday, 10:30 PM to 07:00 AM, with rotational weekends. Eligible for shift differential: 10% for second shift hours and 15% for third shift hours. Further details provided upon offer. Responsibilities Perform test procedures of moderate/high complexity requiring independent judgment in specialties qualified by education, training, and experience. Demonstrate proficiency in all areas of testing and troubleshoot applicable instruments and procedures. Support quality control, troubleshooting complex problems, customer support, instrument and equipment maintenance, staff training, process improvement, and special projects. Perform and report analytical tests per Standard Operating Procedures, ensuring quality control requirements are met. Comply with laboratory policies for specimen handling, processing, analysis, reporting, and record maintenance. Adhere to analytical schedules to maintain turnaround times for results, including STAT or critical results. Ensure reagents/test kits have received dates, expiration dates, and, if applicable, opened dates. Document QC analysis to ensure accuracy of clinical data and proper instrument function; make decisions on assay or test disposition. Inform supervisory personnel of all problems related to test procedures. Report deviations from standard or accepted testing procedures and cooperate with investigations. Enter test results into the Laboratory Information System for physician review. Maintain laboratory areas and equipment in a safe, functional, and sanitary condition. Complete training and competency checklists as required. Assist supervisor with training other laboratory personnel. Adhere to CLIA, HIPAA, OSHA, and laboratory safety requirements. Use personal protective equipment, engineering controls, and/or work practice controls as directed. Answer questions from clients or other lab personnel, if applicable. Participate in government or regulatory inspections, if needed. Assume lead responsibilities in the absence of a supervisor when qualified and delegated. Perform other duties as assigned, not exhaustive of all responsibilities. Qualifications Required Work Experience : One (1) year full‑time experience or training (high complexity testing) in a clinical laboratory setting. Preferred Work Experience : Minimum of 3 years clinical experience with current department, most recent year in present department. Physical and Mental Requirements Lifting and carrying: 1–10 lbs frequently, 11–25 lbs occasionally, 36–50 lbs seldom, >50 lbs without assistance. Ability to stand and work at the bench for long periods. Frequent walking and/or standing. Proficiency with a variety of manual and automated pipettes and laboratory instruments requiring significant dexterity. Knowledge Comprehensive theoretical and operational job knowledge in designated specialty. Knowledge of organizational/departmental policies and procedures. BS/BA in Medical Technology, Chemistry or Biology; or Associate’s degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology; or previously qualified as a Technologist under 42 CFR 493.1433. Foreign‑educated candidates must provide a credential evaluation from IERF; U.S. candidates must provide an original transcript. Other state‑specific requirements may apply; check with local HR or QA departments. Skills Proven leadership and problem‑solving skills. Detail‑oriented, able to work independently, set priorities, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Interpersonal skills to interact courteously and effectively with supervisors, co‑workers, and clients. Communication skills to handle telephone inquiries from clients. Ability to handle client information confidentially. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and Laboratory Information Systems. Education Associates Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Technology (Preferred) Bachelor’s Degree (BS) in Medical Technology, Biology or Chemistry (Preferred) Licenses and Certifications ASCP Certification (Preferred) About the Team Quest Diagnostics honors our service members and encourages veterans to apply.
