Project: WHOLESALE METER TESTING & CROSS CONNECTION CONTROL PROGRAMS

Under general supervision, drives and operates various types of motor vehicles and other automotive equipment in connection with construction and maintenance operations; The Truck Driver differs from other job codes which may drive trucks in the course of performing duties in that driving is the principal duty of this job code.

Work Location: Millbrae Yard - 1000 El Camino Real, Millbrae

Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:00 am – 3:30 pm

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

• Drives and operates trucks in pulling trailers, as well as pulling and operating compressors and pumps which involves using safety chains and the operation of power lift gates.
• Drives and operates sweepers as well as maintaining and changing brooms and making sure the unit is lubricated daily.
• Drives and operates semi-trailers which haul bulldozers and drives snow removal equipment (Hetch Hetchy) and other pieces of equipment as well as winch trucks which have power take-up units.
• Drives dump trucks with power take-up units which are used to haul brush, garbage, and sand and dispenses materials at dump site.
• Operates multiple-unit tractor mowers and drives equipment in connection with the maintenance of grounds and athletic fields.
• Operates street flushing and mounted air compressor equipment which involves loading water, operating auxiliary pumps, and adjusting sprayers.
• Loads and unloads heavy equipment (such as various types of earth-moving equipment) and construction materials such as aggregates and waste.
• Ensures that loads are properly and safely secured.
• Cleans and does light maintenance on vehicles and equipment by checking oil, tires, and fluid levels, and changing fuses.
• Operates two-way radio for information and safety.
• Prepares in writing a variety of reports such as daily reports which list driving activity, accident reports, maintenance reports, and monthly summaries and may perform office tasks including making routine purchases of materials and supplies.
• Performs required DOT (Department of Transportation) and CHP (California Highway Patrol) inspections and completes appropriate forms.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Desirable Qualifications:  The stated desirable qualifications may be considered at the end of the selection process when candidates are referred for hiring:

• Possession of a Tank Vehicle Endorsement
• Possession of a Hazardous Materials Endorsement
• Qualification to operate vehicles equipped with air brakes

Experience:

1. Two years of verified experience as a truck driver using heavy construction equipment or other trucks over 26,000 pounds, such as winch trucks, semi-trailers, sweepers, multiple-unit tractor mowers, dump trucks, or other construction vehicles with power take-off units and/or lift gates; AND

2. A good driving record. An applicant will be considered a negligent driver (and therefore not qualified) if his/her driving record shows six or more violation points in the last twelve months, or eight or more violation points in the last twenty-four months, or ten or more violation points in the last thirty-six months; AND 

License: Possession of a valid Class B or Class A driver license with current Medical Certificate. License must have no restriction on driving vehicles with air brakes.

DRIVING RECORD:
As part of the Minimum Qualifications review process, applicants will be required to submit a Department of Motor Vehicles printout.

The printout is available from any Department of Motor Vehicles office.  The printout must be current, dated within one month of the date when requested. The printout must be complete and state the word “End” on the final page of the printout .  Applicants who do not submit the printout will  not be allowed to take the move forward with the recruitment process. An applicant will be considered a  negligent driver and he/she will be automatically disqualified if the driving record shows: 6 or more violation points in the last 12 months; 8 or more violation points in the last 24 months; or 10 or more violation points in the last 36 months. The months will be calculated from the date the report is requested.

Important Note(s):

• One year of full-time employment is equivalent to 2000 hours. (2000 hours of qualifying work experience is based on a 40-hour work week.) Any overtime hours that you work above forty (40) hours per week are not included in the calculation to determine full-time employment.

Safety Sensitive Position Requirements: The City and County of San Francisco’s Substance Abuse Policy, in compliance with the Department of Transportation Omnibus Transportation Employer Testing Act of 1991 employing the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) regulations, requires drug and alcohol testing for employees in “safety-sensitive” positions. This Class 7355 Trucker Driver position qualifies as “safety-sensitive” as defined by the FMCSA and FTA regulations. The selected applicants for “safety-sensitive” positions will be required to pass a Pre-Employment drug test prior to appointment and shall be subject to Random, Post-Accident, Reasonable Suspicion, Return-To-Duty, and Follow-Up testing during employment. Prior to appointment to an FMCSA “safety-sensitive” position, each applicant who has participated in a DOT drug and alcohol testing program within the immediately preceding three (3) years will be required to sign a consent form authorizing the City to contact his/her prior employers concerning his/her drug and alcohol test history.
