Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic

Summary The incumbent to this position is a fully journeyman level air conditioning mechanic who has a universal certification certificate covered by section 608 of the Clean Air Act for the purpose of proper refrigerant usage. Certificate must be from an EPA approved agency. The incumbent is responsible for the complete maintenance, repair, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and installation of all air moving‑conditioning and refrigeration equipment located within this facility. Qualifications To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement. A specific length of training and experience is not required – but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality to perform the duties of this position. Evidence must be supported by detailed descriptions on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. The potential eligibles are first evaluated against the prescribed screen‑out element that typically appears as question1 in the online questionnaire. Those who meet the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and eliminated. Eligible candidates are then rated against the remainder of the Job Elements, including equipment assembly, installation, repair, interpretation of instructions and specifications (including blueprint reading), materials, technical practices, troubleshooting, and use of and maintenance of tools and equipment. Experience may be paid or unpaid, including volunteer work through National Service programs such as Peace Corps or AmeriCorps, as well as other professional or community organizations. Volunteer work provides valuable training and experience that can be credited toward the position. Duties Join the West Texas VA Health Care System (WTVAHCS) as an Air‑Conditioning Equipment Mechanic. Perform installation, troubleshooting, preventative maintenance, and repair of all HVAC&R equipment and controls. Repair, troubleshoot, maintain, and install air‑conditioning equipment in the hospital and ancillary buildings. Install, troubleshoot, repair, and maintain refrigerators, freezers, and ice machines utilized for patient food, drugs, laboratory specimens, and blood products. Operate and repair environmental control systems, including adding and removing points, building graphics, modifying and troubleshooting programming, repairing and replacing sensors, actuators, other control devices, and LAN equipment such as terminal controllers. Diagnose and repair a wide variety of equipment and systems providing heating, cooling, humidification, dehumidification, and air cleaning, filtering, and circulation. Work schedule: Monday‑Friday, 8:00 am–4:30 pm.
