About Corgi

Corgi is an AI-first property and casualty insurance carrier backed by Y Combinator (S24). We're building a surplus lines carrier from the ground up: our own paper, our own forms, our own rating, and software that gets a policy bound in hours instead of weeks.

We write general liability, umbrella, and specialty casualty on our own paper, and the book is growing. We need someone who owns how we underwrite it.

About the Role

As Head of Liability Underwriting, you'll own how Corgi underwrites casualty risk across every line that carries it. You'll set appetite, write the class guidelines, decide how we deploy limits, and be accountable for how the liability book performs. You'll work side by side with our SWEs and product team to turn that judgment into rating logic, forms, and referral rules the system enforces on every quote.

This is a builder role on a small, fast-moving team. You won't inherit a mature department. You'll design one.

What You'll Do

• Set liability appetite by class, state, and limit, and write and maintain the underwriting guidelines, authority levels, and referral rules that govern it.

• Decide how we deploy limits: primary and excess structure, attachment points, sublimits, and when a risk does not belong in the book.
\n
• Partner on policy forms and endorsements, including the exclusions, additional insured terms, and contractual risk transfer requirements that make a casualty book work.
\n
• Work with SWEs and actuarial resources to build and refine liability rating logic, and make sure what the system produces reflects sound underwriting.
\n
• Own the liability loss ratio, mix, and rate adequacy: watch severity and verdict trends, and adjust appetite and pricing before the losses show up.
\n
• Support risk and portfolio management across the liability book: track limits exposed, concentration by class and state, and large-loss potential, and bring that view to reinsurance and capital decisions.
\n
• Work with claims on large and complex losses so what we learn goes straight back into the guidelines.
\n
• Hire and lead liability underwriters as the book scales.
\n

Who You Are

\n
• 5+ years underwriting commercial casualty with real authority, and you've owned a book and its results.
\n
• You've set appetite and written liability underwriting guidelines.
\n
• You know general liability coverage in depth: occurrence versus claims-made, products and completed operations, additional insureds, and contractual risk transfer.
\n
• You enjoy building on a small, fast-moving team. If your instinct is to schedule a meeting about scheduling a meeting, this isn't the right fit.

Nice to Have (Not Required)

• E&S or specialty casualty experience.
\n
• Umbrella and excess underwriting experience.
\n
• Experience working closely with SWEs.
\n
• CPCU or a similar designation.
\n
