Position: Technical Editor and Writer


Location: Elkridge, MD

Overview


We are seeking a highly skilled Technical Writer to develop and deliver technical manual content for advanced ground and airborne radar systems. This role focuses on creating clear, accurate, and structured documentation for military end users.


Responsibilities
• Develop, write, and revise technical manual content, including:
• Operating procedures
• Maintenance procedures
• Troubleshooting guides
• Preventive maintenance instructions
• Ensure technical information is communicated clearly, accurately, and effectively
• Coordinate the development of illustrative materials such as diagrams, schematics, charts, and drawings
• Perform thorough quality reviews of documentation
• Author and publish content in structured and electronic formats (e.g., HTML, XML, SGML)
• Collaborate with engineers, technical leads, writers, and instructors to produce documentation at varying levels of detail
• Research and compile information from engineering data, program documentation, and technical sources
• Develop structured outlines and ensure compliance with applicable technical documentation standards
• Support additional documentation and content development tasks as needed


Basic Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in a STEM field or a related discipline, or
• Hands-on experience in military operations and maintenance involving radar, communications, electro-optics, networking, or sensor-based systems, or
• Demonstrated mechanical aptitude gained through relevant professional experience
• Ability to interpret and apply technical specifications (experience with MIL-STD-40051 is a plus)
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
• Proficiency with Adobe Acrobat
• Experience tagging and working with XML content
• At least 2 years of technical writing experience using structured authoring tools (e.g., Arbortext or similar XML-based systems)
• Experience with collaboration and tracking tools such as Confluence and JIRA
• Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously
• Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving capabilities
• Strong written and verbal communication skills
• Self-motivated and able to work effectively in a team environment


Preferred Qualifications
• 5+ years of experience in technical writing with structured authoring tools (e.g., Arbortext or equivalent)
• Knowledge of Simplified Technical English (ASD-STE100)
• Strong expertise in structured content standards such as XML, SGML, HTML, S1000D, and DITA
• Experience developing technical documentation for complex systems or defense-related platforms.
