Custodian Job Summary: Assist in the efficient operation of the custodial department to project a positive image of the Northwest R-I School District. Daily Responsibilities Police grounds (when instructed) Clean and prepare area before and after any activity, as required Clean classrooms Clean classroom doors and windows Clean chalkboard, white boards and trays (all come off unless noted) Empty pencil sharpener (electric included) Empty trash cans (replace liners) Dust ledges, window sills, furniture, and any flat surfaces Spot clean desktops Dust mop tile areas and vacuum any carpets in rooms Vacuum any rooms that are completely carpet Spot mop classrooms Check windows, turn off lights, lock doors Clean hallways Dust locker tops, fire extinguisher cabinets, any permanent fixtures on walls, coat racks, etc. Sweep hallways - edges, corners, behind doors Mop hall completely - edges, behind doors and corners. Run the machine over the hall. Clean restrooms Dust partitions, vents, hand dryers Sweep floor Sanitize sinks and fixtures - wipe down completely Sanitize toilets and urinals completely - top to bottom Remove graffiti Check paper products and stock supplies, as needed (soap, toilet paper, and paper towels) Empty trash Mop floors Power spray any restroom, as scheduled Perform duties as required by principals or supervisors. Weekly Responsibilities Clean all student desktops completely Mop all classrooms completely Power spray all restrooms (schedule) Dust all classrooms All employees must report their absences to their immediate supervisor prior to their scheduled shift. Qualifications Education and/or Experience: Preferred prior experience in a school setting. Communication Skills: Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, and interact effectively with all aspects of the school community is required. Ability to solve conflicts, maintain confidentiality and remain open to various ideas and viewpoints. Reasoning Ability: Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines while complying with established policies and procedures of the building and district. Ability to concentrate, think, read and learn is necessary to perform the essential job duties. Other Skills and Abilities: Excellent human relations skills Ability to work independently Demonstrate organizational skills Familiar with facility operations Physical Demands While performing the duties of this job, the employee must regularly sit, talk, listen, and respond. The employee is regularly required to sit; use repetitive wrist, hand and/or finger movement; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to stand and walk. The employee will regularly stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, precise hand-eye coordination and the ability to identify and distinguish colors. Occasionally, the employee may lift up to 50 pounds, such as to lift files, papers, and equipment. Work Environment The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties of this job. The noise level in the work environment is usually at a moderate to loud level with frequent interruptions. The employee continuously interacts with students, staff and the public. Travel may be necessary to various District buildings and/or other sites.
