Associate Teacher Norfolk Public School District – Norfolk, Virginia Job Details Job ID: 5777632 Application Deadline: Jul 13, 2026 11:59 PM (Eastern Standard Time) Posted: Jun 11, 2026 4:00 AM (UTC) Starting Date: To Be Determined Position Type: Full-Time Salary: $54,733 to $54,733 Per Year Job Description Full-Time; Exempt; 200 Days/Year; 7.33 Hours/Day; Grade T001 Job Summary Fulfills classroom duties while following a fast‑tracked educational route to qualifying for and obtaining a VDOE teaching license; under general supervision from a school‑based administrator and teacher mentor, plans and provides relevant learning experiences using the Virginia Standards of Learning, designated curriculum, effective and engaging strategies, resources, and data to meet the needs of all students; provides a respectful, positive, safe, student‑centered learning environment that considers the developmental needs of students; collaborates with colleagues/administrators/families and participates in professional growth activities that result in enhanced student academic achievement. The Associate Teacher is a non‑licensed employee who commits to working on the requirements for a Virginia teaching license during the one‑year employment period. Essential Duties Instructs students in a program of study which meets stated objectives and prepares students to master grade level standards. With support and collaboration with Norfolk Public Schools’ instructional leadership and school‑based staff, designs instructional objectives, learning activities, and assessments which align to state standards and the Division’s goals and program of studies. Develops lesson plans and supplementary materials compatible with the division’s basic instructional philosophy and congruent with course / SOL standards; provides individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student and subgroups of students. Translates lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize the available time for instruction and to actively engage students. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom by providing positive reinforcement of acceptable behaviors and modifying unacceptable behaviors. Evaluates academic and social growth of students, prepares report cards, and keeps appropriate records to include attendance reports, checklists, and other necessary forms of recordkeeping. Communicates regularly with parents or guardians through conferences and other means to discuss student progress. Supervises and monitors student movement and escorts students to resources, bathrooms, buses, cafeteria, room changes and other activities in the building. Administers standardized testing in accordance with division testing practices. Models nondiscriminatory practices in all activities. Other Duties Works to create a plan to ensure licensure requirements are completed by May 15 of every year. Maintains professional competence by attending staff development programs, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities. Performs any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator. Minimum Qualifications Must be enrolled in iTeach or other alternate route to licensure program. Must possess a Bachelor’s (minimum GPA 2.5+). Must have never held a teaching license with the Virginia Department of Education. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing. Must be willing and able to secure provisional licensure eligibility within current contract year. Working Conditions & Physical Requirements Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to enter data into a computer and other technological devices; to see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal classroom levels, outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly in normal classrooms, outdoors and on the telephone; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds; and to bend, stoop, sit on the floor, climb stairs, walk and reach overhead.
