Student Support Advocate

Under general supervision, to serve as advocate for families; identify and provide resources for children and their families.

Qualifications:

• High school graduation or its equivalent.
• Ability to speak effectively; understand and follow oral and written instructions; work independently on own initiative; establish and maintain cooperative relationships; ability to work calmly and accurately under pressure and with frequent interruptions.
• Must pass district NCLB instructional assistant and bilingual competency tests.
• Possess valid California driver license.
• Experience working with families of school age children.
• Knowledge of community resources and services available to families in the district.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Essential Functions:

• Facilitate family access to school and community resources.
• Make family referrals to multi-disciplinary teams as appropriate.
• Assist families in their participation in multi-disciplinary planning.
• Participate in program training, conferences, and evaluations.
• Make student referrals to onsite student providers.
• Coordinate services with Advocacy Services Coordinator.
• Perform other related duties as required.

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
• Ability to stand and circulate for extended periods of time.
• Ability to see and read fine print and work with small objects with or without vision aids.
• Ability to hear and understand speech at normal levels with or without aids.
• Ability to communicate so others will clearly understand normal conversation.
• Ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 10 pounds on a regular basis and up to 25 pounds occasionally.
• Ability to reach in all directions.
• Physical dexterity in limbs and digits to operate computers.

Mental Requirements:

• Ability to concentrate on a single task for up to two (2) hours at a time.
• Ability to learn quickly and adapt to a variety of technology, instructions, and task methods.
• Ability to meet deadlines in terms of work assignment schedules.

Social Requirements:

• Interact daily in person with other members of the site and school staff and possess comfortable interpersonal skills and cooperative attitudes.
• Because of the time urgent nature of duties and because work product of position is interdependent with that of other staff, consistent attendance is required.
• Convey an understanding, patient attitude toward other students, parents, staff and members of community.
• Maintain the privacy of confidential information including pupil data, staff data, or any other data.

Supervision:

Under the general supervision of the Coordinator, Advocacy Services or designee.
