Assistant Principal – High School

Assist the school principal in the overall administration of the instructional program and campus-level operations. The Assistant Principal is expected to handle specific operations of the campus, supervise and implement the campus discipline plan, and assist the principal in evaluating staff performance to create a learning environment that maximizes the potential of each student.

Reports to: Principal

Term: not to exceed 216 days

Status: Exempt

Pay: $65,000 - $85,000

Assist the school principal in the overall administration of the instructional program and campus-level operations. The Assistant Principal is expected to handle specific operations of the campus, supervise and implement the campus discipline plan, and assist the principal in evaluating staff performance to create a learning environment that maximizes the potential of each student.

Education/Certification:

• Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
• Valid Texas Administrator's Certificate (Mid-Management or Principal).
• Valid Texas teaching certificate.
• T-TESS (Texas Teacher Evaluation and Support System) training and certification required.

Special Knowledge/Skills:

• Thorough understanding of curriculum, instruction, and student learning.
• Thorough understanding of school operations.
• Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to coordinate campus support operations.
• Self-starter and innovator with a positive team-member attitude.

Experience:

• At least five (5) years of successful classroom teaching experience required.
• Teaching experience at the high school level is preferred.
• Administrative experience is preferred but not required.

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Management:

• Participate in the development and evaluation of educational programs.
• Encourage and support the development of innovative instructional programs, helping teachers pilot efforts when appropriate.
• Promote the use of technology in the teaching/learning process.
• Serve as the campus testing coordinator.

School/Organizational Climate & Improvement:

• Promote a positive, caring, and academically safe learning environment.
• Deal sensitively and fairly with persons from diverse cultural backgrounds.
• Participate in the development of campus improvement plans with staff, parents, and community members.
• Help the principal develop and use information systems to track progress on performance objectives.

Personnel Management:

• Observe employee performance, record observations, and conduct evaluation conferences.
• Serve as the second appraiser for the designated teacher appraisal system.
• Assist the principal in interviewing, selecting, and orienting new staff.

Administration and Fiscal/Facilities Management:

• Embrace shared leadership and collaboration with administrative staff and teachers.
• Supervise campus operations in the principal's absence.
• Participate in the development of class schedules, teacher assignments, and extracurricular activity schedules.
• Supervise the reporting and monitoring of student attendance and coordinate with the attendance clerk on follow-up investigations.
• Requisition supplies, textbooks, and equipment; maintain records and verify receipts for materials.
• Coordinate the following programs: Special Education, ESL, 504, or RtI.
• Assist with safety inspections and safety-drill practice activities.
• Coordinate transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services.

Student Management:

• Ensure students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods.
• Develop and implement a student discipline management system that results in positive behavior and supports learning.
• Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and student discipline is appropriate and equitable.
• Conduct conferences regarding student and school issues with parents, students, and teachers.

Professional Growth and Community Relations:

• Participate in professional development to improve skills related to the job assignment.
• Articulate the school's mission to the community and solicit support in realizing that mission.
• Demonstrate awareness of school-community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.
• Use effective techniques to encourage community and parent involvement.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

• Share supervisory responsibility for professional staff with the school principal.
• Supervise teachers, custodians, paraprofessionals, clerical personnel, and others as assigned.

Working Conditions:

• Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work with frequent interruptions.
• Physical Demands/Environmental Factors: Occasional districtwide travel; occasional prolonged and irregular hours.
