This full‑time day‑shift (Monday–Friday) exempt role is part of Inova’s commitment to high quality cancer care. Responsibilities Guide patients and families through the health system from diagnosis to follow‑up care, ensuring seamless navigation and coordination. Coordinate care plans, answer disease‑related questions, schedule appointments, assist with referrals, and provide community resources; advocate and educate patients throughout the care process. Serve as a contact for internal and external community/family services, including clinical research, support services, and after‑care plans, and refer cases to appropriate resources. Create a seamless flow through the health system, participating in multidisciplinary team coordination, promoting timely follow‑up on treatment and supportive care recommendations. Facilitate individualized care addressing functional status, cultural considerations, health literacy, psychosocial, reproductive/fertility, and spiritual needs of patients and caregivers. Eliminate barriers to access by ensuring culturally sensitive, timely communication and coordination and by documenting, tracking, and monitoring patient data. Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and manage caseload assignment, including complex cases. Advocate for patients’ rights and appropriate service utilization, promoting patient‑centered care and shared decision‑making. Provide emotional support, counseling, and clinical education to patients and families, encouraging engagement in care planning and decision‑making. Build therapeutic relationships, educate group and individuals about treatment options, self‑care, side‑effect management, clinical trials, post‑treatment care, and survivorship. Develop community‑based outreach, including written materials and presentations, and co‑facilitate disease‑specific support groups. Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to address questions, develop care plans, educate team members, and serve as a clinical consultant. Improve the healthcare experience by promoting lifelong learning, evidence‑based practice, and patient satisfaction; partner with physicians and staff to reduce unnecessary utilization. Professional Responsibilities Promote lifelong learning and evidence‑based practice to improve cancer care. Obtain and maintain oncology nursing certification. Contribute to the oncology community’s knowledge base through professional organizations, presentations, publications, and research. Disseminate role information through peer education, mentoring, and preceptor experiences. Orient, mentor, and guide novice oncology nurse navigators. Collaborate with cancer program administration to develop strategies for accreditation standards. Minimum Qualifications 3 to 5 years of progressive clinical nursing experience with primary care management of patient populations. BSN required. Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through American Heart Association. Certification in oncology within 2 years of employment. Strong oncology knowledge; basic understanding of managed care and insurance processes; knowledge of community resources; strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills; proficient computer skills.
