Cardiac Sonographer II - Invasive Cardiology - Days

Sign-On Incentive $20,000 sign-on incentive available for offers accepted prior to May 31, 2026. Scope of Practice Perform diagnostic ultrasound procedures or examinations upon order of a licensed independent practitioner (LIP). Determine ultrasonic frequencies and appropriate transducers for the anatomic area of interest. Maintain records, respect confidentiality, and apply patient safety principles during procedures. Receive, relay, and document imaging orders in the patient’s medical record. Correlate clinical history with the ordered procedure and verify informed consent. Assume responsibility for patient needs before, during, and after procedures. Prepare patients for procedures and apply principles of ALARA to minimize exposure. Perform venipuncture and establish intravenous access when required by the LIP. Identify and administer medications associated with diagnostic imaging as prescribed. Evaluate images for technical quality and ensure proper identification is recorded. Identify and manage emergency situations until appropriate support arrives. Provide patient education about imaging procedures. Mentor students and oversee learners. Participate in quality assurance activities. Essential Job Statements Cardiac sonographers perform or assist in ultrasound imaging exams independently or with minimal assistance. Complete imaging exams based on physician orders, department protocols, and safety standards. Represent the goals, values, and vision of VCU Health System. Ensure adherence to regulatory standards, health system policies, procedures, and guidelines. Resolve basic service delivery issues. Patient Population Provide equitable care appropriate to the age of patients served: Infants (1–12 months), Pediatrics (1–12 years), Adolescents (13–17 years), Adults (18–64 years), Geriatrics (65 years and older). All age groups served. Employment Qualifications Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for Hire : Certification by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDCS AE or PE) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (RCS or RCCS). Licensure, Certification, or Registration Requirements for continued employment : Current certification by RDCS (ARDMS) or RCS or RCCS (CCI) and Basic Life Support (BLS for Healthcare Providers). Experience REQUIRED : Minimum 1 year of previous work as a Cardiac Sonographer Technologist. Experience PREFERRED : 3 years of previous work as a Cardiac Sonographer/Technologist and experience in an academic medical center. Education / Training REQUIRED : Graduation from an allied health program specific to sonography that meets educational requirements for certification from the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (RDCS AE or PE) or Cardiovascular Credentialing International (RCS or RCCS); or graduation from a CAAHEP or CMA accredited program in cardiac sonography; or graduation from a minimum 2‑year JRC accredited program in Cardiac Sonography recognized by ARRT or JRC‑DMS; or graduation from a bachelor’s degree program and hold at least one certification as above. Education / Training PREFERRED : Bachelor’s Degree in cardiac sonography. Physical Requirements Lift 20–50 lbs. Prolonged standing, sitting, and walking. Repetitive motion and prolonged computer interaction. Strong recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speaking, legible writing, reading, logical thinking. Fast‑paced environment, ability to handle multiple priorities, frequent and intense customer interactions, noisy environment, adaptability to frequent change. Additional Position Requirements Individual shift rotation and schedules will be established with your specific manager or supervisor. Shift rotations and hours may be adjusted as necessary to meet staffing needs. Weekend and after‑hours coverage may be required. Sonographers are considered “Essential Employees” and may be required to report to work per VCUHS Policy.
