DEFINITION
To clean and repair streets, sewer lines, storm drains and traffic signs throughout the City.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITY :

1. Serve as a representative of the City of Mesquite, demonstrating a positive attitude and progressive actions through the display of professionalism, courtesy, and appropriate tact and discretion in all interactions with other employees and with the public,.
2. Maintain city lots and right-of-ways; mow, spray and trim trees. Removes debris and illegally dumped garbage from City property. Maintain barricades, street signs, and other traffic control devices.
3. Assist streets crew with daily tasks.
4. Perform tasks such as cleaning vehicles, equipment and shop, pouring and finishing concrete and weed abatement.
5. Paint curbs, work with road striping crew.
6. Be dependable and meet acceptable attendance requirements at all times.
7. Follow all applicable safety rules and regulations.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
A. Perform other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS :
The degree of knowledge and ability as outlined under this section is that which is necessary to satisfactory perform the essential functions of this position
Knowledge of :

• Basic maintenance and repair methods and procedures used in assigned area.
• Safe and effective operating practices of light equipment used in assigned area.

Ability to:

• Operate light equipment and power tools used in public works maintenance operations.
• Work independently or as part of a crew.
• Follow directions and have a desire to learn.
• Perform hard physical labor under confined and uncomfortable conditions.
• Ability to work flexible hours including weekends, holidays and special events.
• Communicate effectively and courteously with City employees and the public.

Experience, Education & Training:
Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience which provides the individual with the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: High School diploma or G.E.D.
Experience: Experience with concrete.
Training: No training necessary.
License or Certificate: Must possess at the time of employment and continuously throughout employment a valid Nevada or "border state" driver's license, as defined by NRS 483.

Supplemental Information

WORKING CONDITIONS :
Work is performed under the following conditions:
Work is primarily performed outside in varying and extreme weather conditions for extended periods of time where employees are exposed to excessive loud noise, vibration, dust and traffic.
Physical Requirements :
Physical effort is required to perform heavy manual labor in confined and cramped spaces and uncomfortable conditions, climb ladders, frequent kneeling, stooping, walking, bending, twisting, reaching, and standing for long periods of time. Moderate amount of mental effort required. Regular lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling of objects and equipment ranging in weight from 25 to 100 lbs is required. Subject to 24 hour call back for emergency conditions.
Job Hazard/Risk Factors :
Employees risk physical hazard from mechanical and electrical equipment, exposure to live sewer systems, storm drain systems, human debris, drug paraphernalia, heavy equipment, hot tar and asphalt, working in and around trenches, hazardous gases, fumes, paint, chemicals and pesticides.

CASUAL EMPLOYEE STATUS: Most casual employment with the City of Mesquite is for a short time. Some casual employees are asked to work longer periods. Sometimes, casual employees work in more than one job.

Position is considered safety sensitive and is subject to drug testing.
