Teacher of the Visually Impaired

Position start date: FY27The Teacher of the Visually Impaired provides specialized educational support to students who are blind or have low vision. These educators ensure students can access the standard curriculum and learn essential life skills.Visually Impaired Teacher Qualifications & SkillsHold a valid Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) certification with a Vision Impairment or TVI endorsement. Certification in teaching students with visual impairmentsMinimum of Bachelor's Degree in the field of educationExperience working with children or adolescents in an educational settingKnowledgeable of resources in the state of Georgia to support students with visual impairments (Georgia Instructional Materials Center; Smokey Powell)Conduct educational evaluations to determine possible eligibility in the area of Vision Impairment including Functional Vision and Learning Media assessmentsDevelop and implement individualized education programs (IEPs) for students with visual impairmentsFamiliarity with legal requirements and educational policies related to special education, specifically as it relates to visual impairmentsProficiency in Braille and other tactile learning toolsKnowledge of assistive technology and adaptive educational softwareProvide direct instruction in academic subjects, Braille literacy, and use of assistive technologiesInstruct students in basic orientation and mobility skillsOffer training and resources for other educators, staff, and parentsMaintain detailed records of students' progress and educational outcomesParticipate in professional development opportunities to stay current with best practices and new technologiesCollaborate with general education teachers to adapt curriculum and classroom materialsCollaborate effectively with the multidisciplinary team and IEP team to support individual student needs.
