Job Title: Med/Surg RN Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Med/Surg Duration: Part Time Shift: Rotational Day/Night/Evening/Weekend/Holidays Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: One (1) Year Experience Serving in Med/Surg Environment as a Registered Nurse License: NYS RN Licensure Required Certifications: BLS, ACLS Required Description: The Registered Nurse applies knowledge of nursing theory, technical, and communication skills in delivering high-quality compassionate care to patients and families. The RN assesses patient needs, develops a plan of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team, provides direct care, evaluates patient progress, and coordinates care delivery throughout the patient's episode. The Med/Surg RN develops specialized skill in the area of cardiac care, including telemetry monitoring. The RN is accountable for patient and family education to assist the patient and family in understanding self-care beyond hospitalization, including lifestyle changes to support health and healing. He/She promotes comfort and provides emotional support in a healing environment. The RN applies nursing knowledge and skill in the delivery of care by assessing patient and family needs through active listening, social perceptiveness, and analyzing data or information obtained through direct observation and assessment, technology, or health team communication. The RN creates a developmentally and age-appropriate, culturally relevant, individualized plan of care to address the nature and scope of the health problems identified. In collaboration with the patient, family, physician, and health care team members, the RN sets goals and monitors the patient’s progress. The RN adjusts the plan based on patient response or change in condition or reprioritization of needs. The RN promotes, advocates for, and protects the health, safety, and rights of the patient. The RN systematically evaluates the quality and effectiveness of nursing practice, using the results of quality improvement activities to initiate changes in individual nursing practice and to influence care delivery. The RN engages in self-evaluation of practice, identifying strengths and areas in which professional development would be beneficial and takes accountability to increase knowledge and enhance skills. The RN demonstrates skill in the application of nursing interventions, including medication administration. The RN motivates the patient and family by teaching them what is needed to continue care and healing at home. The RN assesses the patient and family learning styles and structures the sessions to maximize understanding. The RN seeks teachable moments during the care delivery process to emphasize pertinent information. The RN asks questions to evaluate retention of key points in the self-care process. The RN provides tools and information to assist the patient and family after discharge. The RN documents the education provided and the patient/family response to the education. The RN encourages and builds mutual trust, respect, and cooperation among team members to promote collaboration and accomplish the best possible patient outcome. The RN teaches others as appropriate and delegates tasks and interventions consistent with the individual’s education, training, and scope of practice. The RN complies with infection prevention strategies and maintains competencies required to care for the specific population in the area assigned. The RN reports potential safety risks and inappropriate or questionable practices. The RN promotes leadership awareness and fosters positive change. The RN conducts rounds and uses tools and equipment needed to keep the patient and family informed, engaged, and safe. Nursing practice reflects the importance of making a meaningful connection with the patient and family. The RN seeks to develop a helping, trusting, and caring relationship by being present in the moment of interaction. The RN listens, communicates, engages, and anticipates the patient and family needs.
