Day-in-the-Life: Structural Steel Welding in Chandler, AZ
Picture your morning on a steel frame rising over Chandler, AZ. You power up your station, review the day’s shop drawings, and map your sequence of full-penetration (full-pen) welds to AWS D1.1 standards. After a quick huddle with the crew, you head to the work zone—sometimes on a scissor lift (up to ~18 feet) , other times along a mezzanine (~9 feet off the ground)—to align, fit, and secure structural members. Precision matters. So does safety. And you take pride in both.
What You’ll Tackle- Execute code-compliant, high-integrity AWS D1.1 welds in 3G and 4G positions with a focus on full-pen joints.
- Support bolt-up beam installation and alignment to keep erection schedules on track.
- Review and interpret blueprints, shop drawings, and structural plans to plan fit-up and sequencing.
- Validate weld quality and structural soundness, following safety protocols at every step.
- Work efficiently at elevation using scissor lifts (up to ~18 feet) and on mezzanine platforms (~9 feet).
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Collaborate closely with your foreman and crew to meet project milestones.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical training is a plus.
- Active AWS D1.1 certification with demonstrated skill in 3G/4G positions.
- 3+ years of structural welding experience.
- Thorough knowledge of welding processes, base metals, filler metals, and site safety requirements.
- Confident reading technical drawings and specifications.
- Meticulous, solution-oriented, and calm under deadlines.
- Comfortable working independently and as part of a fast-moving team.
