Field-Based RF / Utility AMI Maintenance

 

About the Role

Our company is seeking an AMI Network Technician to support and maintain Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) for utility customers throughout Ohio. This is a hands-on, field-based position focused on AMI maintenance, RF troubleshooting, equipment replacement, and software-driven diagnostics supporting a long-term statewide utility program.

The ideal candidate enjoys working in the field, solving technical problems, and using technology to maintain and improve utility communication networks. This individual will work directly with AMI infrastructure, including collectors, RF communication equipment, and smart metering devices, utilizing proprietary software and diagnostic tools to identify, troubleshoot, and resolve network issues.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and replace AMI network equipment including collectors, RF endpoints, and smart meters.
  • Perform field-based equipment replacement ("rip-and-replace") on faulty or outdated hardware.
  • Troubleshoot RF communication and AMI network issues using proprietary software, diagnostic tools, and documented procedures.
  • Utilize PC-based applications to:
  • Identify malfunctioning meters and RF endpoints.
  • Verify network connectivity and communication performance.
  • Document troubleshooting steps, repairs, and completed work.
  • Collaborate with utility customers, supervisors, and internal technical teams to:
  • Support the ongoing maintenance of the State of Ohio AMI network.
  • Communicate recurring issues and recommend long-term improvements.
  • Assist with continuous process improvement by:
  • Refining troubleshooting procedures.
  • Identifying opportunities to improve network reliability and field operations.
  • Follow all company safety policies, utility regulations, and field service procedures.
  • Travel throughout Ohio as needed to support maintenance, troubleshooting, and deployment activities.

 

Required Qualifications

Field Experience

Experience in one or more of the following:

  • AMI deployments or smart meter installation
  • Utility field service
  • Industrial electrical infrastructure
  • RF communication systems
  • Wireless field hardware

 

RF Knowledge

Working knowledge of:

  • RF signal strength
  • Coverage and propagation
  • Signal interference
  • Environmental impacts on RF performance

 

Computer Skills

  • Comfortable using Windows-based computers
  • Ability to quickly learn proprietary software and diagnostic applications
  • Experience documenting field activities electronically

 

Troubleshooting Ability

  • Strong analytical and investigative problem-solving skills
  • Comfortable working through non-scripted technical issues
  • Able to independently diagnose and resolve field problems

 

Adaptability

  • Open to learning new technologies and evolving procedures
  • Willingness to embrace process improvements

 

Communication

  • Clear written documentation skills
  • Professional verbal communication with customers, supervisors, and internal teams

 

Career Interest

  • Desire to build a long-term career supporting utility infrastructure and AMI technology

 

Preferred Qualifications

Experience as a:

  • AMI Deployment Technician
  • Meter Technician
  • Meter Installer
  • Utility Field Technician
  • Utility Foreman or Supervisor

Experience working with:

  • Utility subcontractors
  • Johnson Controls
  • Envocor
  • UPA
  • Similar industrial or utility service organizations

Technical familiarity with:

  • Smart meters
  • Collectors
  • AMI systems
  • Smart Grid technologies
  • RF test equipment
  • Basic networking concepts

Military veterans with experience in:

  • Electronics
  • Communications
  • Signal systems
  • Technical maintenance
  • Telecommunications

  • Occasional after-hours or weekend maintenance during critical utility operations
