Pipe LayerUnder the general supervision of the Construction Supervisor or Construction Crew Leader, this position is responsible for installing and repairing sanitary and storm water sewer structures and pipe systems and laying pipe for storm or sanitary sewers. This position will assist in all other construction related activities for other City Departments as necessary.Essential duties and responsibilities include:Prepare sewer pipes for installation: align and position for sealing; connect pipe pieces and seal joints, using welding equipment, cement, or glue; cut pipes to required lengths.Prepare trenches and install sewer pipes: layout pipe routes, following written instructions or blueprints, and coordinating layouts with supervisors; clean and prepare sites; erect scaffolding, clean up rubble and debris; dig trenches to desired or required depths and set braces to support the sides of excavations, by hand or using trenching tools; grade and level trench bases, using tamping machines and hand tools; check slopes for conformance to requirements; install sewer, water and storm drain pipes, using pipe laying machinery and laser guidance equipment; cover pipes with earth or other materials; and backfill excavations, compact and level earth to grade specifications, using picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes.Locate and repair or replace existing sewer pipes, using magnetic or radio indicators. Tap and drill holes into pipes to introduce auxiliary lines or devices; install and use instruments such as lasers, grade rods, and transit levels.Assure safety of work site. Operate and maintain air monitoring and other sampling devices; control traffic passing, near, in, and around work zones. Tend to pumps, compressors and generators to provide power for generators and prevent back-ups.Assist in the repairs of underground service lines, force mains, manhole repairs, potable water lines, gravity sewer mains, and possible assistance in installing grinder pump systems.Assist in pipe lining operations (Thermoform)Use mobile handheld device to enter work order information and use mapping system to complete various tasksThese essential job functions are not to be construed as a complete statement of all duties performed. Basic knowledge of the methods, materials, practices, procedures, and equipment used in construction field. Equivalent combination of education, skills, training and experience may be considered.Knowledge of/ability to:Operate various power tool and hand tools including, but not limited to, air compressors, gasoline/diesel powered pumps, and sewer cleaning equipment. Use picks, shovels, pneumatic tampers, and rakes.Read blueprints, specifications, tape measure and technical drawings. Must understand construction specifications.Basic plumbing principles and practices.Ability to read, operate and maintain air monitoring and other sampling devices in confined spaces and/or hazardous environmentsAbility to operate heavy equipment, such as a backhoe, excavator, front-loader, fork-lift, mini-excavator and other equipment as necessary.Use instruments such as lasers, grade rods, and transit levels.Licenses: possess a valid driver's license. Must possess or obtain at least a class B CDL within 6 months.Physical demands include:In the performance of job duties, position requires the incumbent to walk, stand or sit for extended periods of time. Work in confined spaces. Bend, squat, twist, crawl, kneel and climb frequently in the performance of job duties. Operate assigned equipment. Perform manual tasks in unfavorable weather conditions for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift at least 80 lbs. (the average weight of a manhole cover)Position requires some nights, weekends, and holidays in response to emergency situations that occur within the plant and collection systems. Requires ability and willingness to work after normal work hours and to work any shift, holidays and weekends if needed.Work environment includes:Position will require employee to work in extreme weather conditions, such as wind, rain, snow, ice, thunder storms. (Possibly for extended periods of time.) Exposure to temperature extremes, high work places, noises, toxic materials and vibrations.
