Network Engineer

We're an award-winning IT solutions provider to the Federal government seeking a Network Engineer to join our project team at a major federal agency. US Citizenship is required for this role. In addition, the selected applicant must submit to a government background investigation and be favorably adjudicated before their first day. This position will be onsite 2xs a week in Washington DC. The selected candidate must live within commuting distance of Washington, D.C. Responsibilities Troubleshoot network, system, and security issues; maintain security tools (e.g., Nessus, Splunk, Burp Suite, SonarQube, Trivy). Operate monitoring platforms (Zabbix, Prometheus, Grafana, Splunk) to collect data, generate reports, and support capacity planning. Tune OS and network configurations to improve performance and resolve errors. Assist development teams with application‑level monitoring for availability and functionality. Provide day‑to‑day support for Fortinet firewall, iptables, proxy, and basic Cisco switch/VPN configuration. Manage internal network services (IPv4/IPv6, DNS, DHCP, firewall rules, micro‑segmentation, authentication). Write, test, and maintain automation scripts in Bash, Python, and PowerShell. Administer Linux servers, virtualization (libvirt/kvm), and container technologies (Docker, Podman, Kubernetes). Help design, deploy, and maintain Kubernetes clusters and related networking components (CNI Network Policies, services, ingress, Helm). Produce and keep up‑to‑date system documentation; use issue‑tracking tools for ticket management. Communicate clearly with stakeholders and solve problems independently with strong analytical skills. Required Skills Minimum of 5 years of experience as a Network Engineer or comparable role. Solid understanding of network protocols, diagnostics, and Cisco networking (routers, switches, VPN). Proven Linux administration experience and ability to create/maintain Bash, Python, and PowerShell scripts. Hands‑on experience with Kubernetes clusters (installation, configuration, troubleshooting) and container tooling (Docker, Podman, Ansible, Harbor). Familiarity with Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) and certificate management. Ability to monitor, troubleshoot, and tune system configurations independently. Strong written and verbal communication; detail‑oriented with experience using ticketing/issue‑tracking systems. Preferred Skills Exposure to Fiber Channel SAN, database administration, or compliance hardening (e.g., security baselines). Working knowledge of Zero Trust principles and network security best practices. Education Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; equivalent professional experience may substitute for the degree.
