Reports directly to the laboratory Support Supervisor assigned to the phlebotomy section. Performs venipuncture, heel puncture and finger puncture according to established procedures. Able to instruct patients correctly for collection of non blood specimens (urines, 24 hour urines, occult blood etc) Accessions specimens into the computer system. Processes specimens in the centrifugation area for distribution to the testing area or for proper storage. Maintains standard precautions at all times. Transports specimens to the laboratory as needed. Provides excellent customer service. May be required to work from various locations (Pavilion, North Campus, or Emerson) or float between various lab departments, as needed based on department needs and within scope of practice. Responsibilities Blood is drawn according to established departmental procedures in a safe manner with minimum trauma to the patient. Monitors for adverse effects of blood draws. Verifies patient identification by using two patient identifiers: Name, DOB or Medical Record Number. Never identifies patient by room number. Labels all specimens in front of patient with required information, Allscripts ID, date and time of collection. Obtains Blood samples from all age ranges including newborn, pediatric, adult, and geriatric patients. Provide instruction and training in theory, technical skills, safety protocols, and laboratory procedures to students and employees. Compliant with all safety standards and utilizes Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Follows and reviews general laboratory, safety, and department policies and procedures. Understands and applies knowledge of test specimen requirements and utilizes available reference materials to ensure that all specimens are collected correctly by staff. Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the appropriate healthcare provider and notifying fellow staff and/or a Laboratory Supervisor, Director, or Manager of unresolved orders. Helps monitor inventory/supplies and informs Supervisor when ordering is needed. Qualifications Required Education: High School Diploma or GED. Preferred Education: Certification from a medical assistant program. Certification from a military medical or laboratory assistant program. Preferred Experience: Phlebotomy experience in a hospital inpatient setting with all age groups, specimens processing, experience using a laboratory information system for accessioning and specimen tracking. Required Licensure/Certifications: N/A Necessary Skills Knowledge of venipunture and skin puncture procedures. Ability to professionally and courteously interact with patients, visitors, co-workers and external laboratory customers. 3. Knowledge of basic computer data entry. Ability to prioritize tasks and organize workload. Knowledge of laboratory techniques in specimen handling and processing. Must be able to handle stressful situations in a professional manner.
