Division Overview The Division of Neonatology at Lurie Children’s, nationally‑ranked by U.S. News & World Report, provides the highest level of care to the most critically ill newborns in the region. The division cares for more than 2,000 infants each year in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at Lurie Children’s and the NICU at Prentice Women’s Hospital. Our NICU is a Level IV facility—the highest designation in Illinois—providing specialized expertise and comprehensive resources to treat the smallest and sickest babies. We receive transfers from 45 hospitals last year and consistently receive the most referrals in Illinois from other Level IV NICU facilities. Specialty Services Neurocritical care for infants with neurological problems Advanced respiratory team for infants with severe lung disease Genetic expertise for infants with birth defects and other genetic disorders Specialized surgical intervention for infants with complex surgical problems On‑site access to 70 pediatric medical and surgical subspecialists in our 64‑bed NICU unit Role Summary The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) works within the multidisciplinary clinical team to provide individualized patient care through history and physical assessment, ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, medication ordering, prescribing and management, formulating diagnoses and patient/family education. The APP promotes evidence‑based practice by conducting or participating in research and academic activities, supports colleagues and staff to promote the professional development of the advanced practice profession at Lurie Children’s and the community‑at‑large, and participates in the transition‑into‑practice fellowship for new graduate APPs. Essential Job Functions Provides expert clinical care, education, consultation, advocacy, research, leadership and mentorship. Manages primary, acute and chronic health problems through comprehensive history, physical examination, assessment and diagnosis, including palliative and end‑of‑life care. Orders, performs and interprets diagnostic and therapeutic tests and procedures. Orders and prescribes pharmacologic and non‑pharmacologic interventions and performs other therapeutic or corrective measures to treat illness and improve health status. Promotes the advancement of the profession at Lurie Children’s and the community‑at‑large through publication, participation in professional organizations and educational support to nursing staff. Collaborates and coordinates care with the medical team to deliver evidence‑based care and establish best practices. Participates in research design, implementation and interpretation, and meets the Medical Staffs Allied Health Practitioners core measures of performance related to patient care, medical knowledge, practice‑based learning and improvement, interpersonal communication skills, professionalism and system‑based practice. Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus, innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to patients, families, co‑workers and others. Role may include evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Master’s degree or higher from an accredited school appropriate for certification as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant; CNS certification is not acceptable if hired after January12010. Two (2) years of relevant clinical experience is preferred. Licensure in the State of Illinois as an APRN or PA is required. Clinical privileges through credentialing by the Medical Staff Office must be achieved within 90days of hire. Practices under the direction of advanced practice provider or physician providers until fully credentialed and privileged. Basic Life Support certification required. Pediatric Advanced Life Support certification and/or other specialty certification required in some areas within 6months of employment; any other certification required for specialty area. Excellent interpersonal skills, basic computer skills and strong verbal and written communication skills.
