Grants Accountant

Ascendo Resources is currently seeking a Senior Grants Accountant for a full-time, hybrid role. Salary range is ideally from $80,000 - $90,000 a year.Please read the following job description thoroughly to ensure you are the right fit for this role before applying.Our client is a well-established, mission-driven nonprofit based in Brooklyn.This Senior Grants Accountant will support a large and complex portfolio of government-funded housing and social service programs. The organization manages significant City, State, and Federal funding and plays a critical role in delivering housing and community services across New York City.This is a highly visible role with direct interaction with executive leadership, program teams, and external funders.Work ArrangementHybrid schedule: 3 days on-siteOne full week per month remote during billing cyclesRole OverviewThe Senior Grant Accountant is responsible for managing a large-scale government grant portfolio ($25M+), with a strong focus on NYC housing-related contracts. This role oversees billing, budgeting, forecasting, reconciliations, and compliance, while supervising three Grant Accountants and partnering closely with Finance, Program, and external funding agencies.Key ResponsibilitiesGrant Billing & Revenue ManagementManage monthly, quarterly, and semi-annual billing for government and foundation contractsProcess and review 50–80 invoices per month with accuracy and timelinessRespond to funder inquiries and resolve questioned or disallowed costsCoordinate with Accounts Receivable to ensure accurate collections and GL balancesPrepare cash flow projections and funding advance requestsMaintain complete, audit-ready billing documentationBudgeting, Forecasting & Financial OversightDevelop grant budgets and manage budget modifications with program leadershipLead forecasting and variance analysis against approved budgetsSupport funding proposals with assumptions, actuals, and financial dataConduct quarterly budget-to-actual meetings with program teamsTrain staff on financial reporting, coding, and variance interpretationReconciliations & CompliancePerform monthly grant reconciliations ensuring allowability and proper allocationMonitor payroll distributions, cost allocations, and process reclasses as neededEnsure compliance with OMB Uniform Guidance (2 CFR 200)Oversee City, State, and Federal reporting requirementsSystems & Funder PortalsExtensive use of NYC PASSport for procurement and invoicingWorking knowledge of NYS SFS (Statewide Financial System)Familiarity with DOH/OASIS and other government reporting platformsLeadership & Cross-Functional SupportSupervise and mentor three Grant AccountantsServe as a liaison between Finance, HR, and Program teamsSupport housing and social service programs with financial guidanceCollaborate with operations xhyhwjd accounting on cost center setup and closeoutsAudit & Special ProjectsSupport funder and financial statement auditsPrepare audit schedules and supporting documentationParticipate in funder trainings and special projects as assignedRequired QualificationsBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Public Administration, or related field5+ years of nonprofit grants accounting experienceHands-on experience with City-funded grants and PASSportProven ability to manage large grant portfolios ($25M+)Prior supervisory or lead experienceStrong Excel skills (PivotTables, VLOOKUP, SUMIFs)Highly organized, detail-oriented, and deadline-drivenBenefitsComprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage403(b) retirement plan with employer matchGenerous PTO and paid holidaysStable, mission-driven organization with long-term funding
