POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direction of Radiology Leadership and the Medical Director, the Mammography Technologist is responsible for performing high-quality screening and diagnostic mammography and bone density procedures in accordance with established clinical protocols and regulatory standards. This position ensures the safety, comfort, and dignity of patients while operating mammography and bone density equipment to obtain accurate diagnostic images. The Mammography Technologist maintains a strong commitment to patient-centered care, quality assurance, radiation safety, and collaboration with radiologists and the healthcare team.
DEPT. SCOPE OF SERVICE:
The Department of Radiology at Brattleboro Memorial Hospital is a consultative service that will provide services in the following categories: diagnostic radiology, nuclear medicine, ultrasound, computed tomography, interventional radiography, MRI, bone density and mammography. The department offers services 24 hours a day, seven days a week to inpatients, outpatients and emergency room patients of all ages. Whereas x-ray procedures constitute the majority of our service, we also provide related quality control (including protecting patients and staff from harmful radiation), quality assurance monitoring and evaluation, marketing and continuing education of staff and patients. Radiology is comprised of licensed technologists, certified and licensed nuclear medicine technologists, secretarial staff and licensed radiologists.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Perform screening and diagnostic mammography and bone density examinations in accordance with physician orders, departmental protocols, and professional standards.
- Verify patient identity, explain procedures, answer questions, and obtain relevant clinical history to ensure appropriate imaging.
- Position patients accurately to obtain optimal diagnostic images while maintaining patient comfort, privacy, and dignity.
- Operate mammography equipment safely and effectively, making technical adjustments as needed to produce high-quality images.
- Evaluate images for diagnostic quality and repeat studies when necessary while minimizing patient radiation exposure.
- Adhere to radiation safety principles and established infection prevention and control practices.
- Monitor patients throughout examinations and respond appropriately to changes in condition or patient concerns.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR), Radiology Information System (RIS) and Breast software systems.
- Ensure images are properly labeled, archived, and transmitted through the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS).
- Prepare examination rooms and equipment, ensuring proper cleanliness, functionality, and readiness for patient care.
- Perform routine quality control testing and report equipment malfunctions or safety concerns promptly.
- Maintain compliance with Mammography Quality Standards Act (MQSA), American College of Radiology (ACR) accreditation standards, state regulations, and hospital policies.
- Collaborate effectively with radiologists, referring providers, nurses, and other members of the healthcare team to support timely patient care.
- Assist with breast interventional procedures, including stereotactic breast biopsies and needle localizations, as appropriate to departmental operations and individual competency.
- Participate in departmental quality improvement initiatives, QC, continuing education, and competency assessments.
- Maintain required licensure, certifications, and continuing education to remain in compliance with regulatory and professional standards.
- Protect patient confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and all applicable privacy regulations.
- Participate in department meetings, staff education, and organizational initiatives as assigned.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and operational needs of the Radiology Department.
Education:
- Formal AMA approved school of Radiologic Technology required.
Experience:
- Previous experience in all areas of Radiologic technology, in a hospital setting.
Licensure/Certification:
- Mammography and Radiologic Technology
- Certified in CPR
- Certified by the ARRT required, except those technologists credentialed through state certification which the State of Vermont Board of Radiologic Technology delegates approval power by rule and hired prior to January 1, 2000.
- Licensed by the State of Vermont
Mental Efforts:
- Ability to transport patients as needed.
- Ability to work within a limited space and in bright and low-lighted rooms.
- Ability to write and file for extended periods of time.
- Moderate number of lifting patients and equipment.
- Mobility requirements may include the ability to squat, stand and/or walk for a reasonable length of time.
- Must be able to perform tasks which require moderately difficult manual manipulations such as using a keyboard, writing and filing for extended periods of time, must be able to perform tasks which require hand-eye coordination such a data entry, copying and developing films.
- Environment & Working Conditions Potential for exposure to electrical and radiation hazards, electromagnetic radiation as in CRT’s.
- Potential for exposure to communicable disease or body fluids.

The listed range represents the pay scale reasonably expected for a successful candidate based on factors such as relevant experience, education, internal equity, and market competitiveness. Final compensation will be determined during the hiring process.
