Shift Information

Shift: 6:45 AM - 7:15 PM

Unit Information

Location: Asheville, NC

Unit: Cardiovascular Progressive Care (CVPC)

Number of Beds: 40 cardiac surgery stepdown beds

Staffing: Approximately 100 total staff members

General Information

The primary patient population consists of individuals undergoing cardiovascular (CV) and vascular surgeries, including:

• Open heart surgeries (CABG, AVR, MVR, Bentall, TAVR, etc.)
• Thoracic lung surgeries (lobectomy, thoracotomy, etc.)
• Esophagogastrectomy
• Aortic Aneurysm Repairs (open and endovascular)
• Femoral-Popliteal Bypass
• Carotid Endarterectomies

The unit also cares for overflow medical cardiology patients with diagnoses such as heart failure, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), chest pain, sepsis, and heart block.

Staffing Information

Day Shift:

• 1 Charge RN (routinely out of staffing)
• 13 RNs
• 4 Patient Care Technicians (PCTs)
• 1.33 Health Unit Coordinators (HUC)

Night Shift:

• 1 Charge RN (routinely out of staffing)
• 13 RNs
• 4 PCTs
• 0.33 HUC

Patient Ratios: 1:5 patients per RN, 1:13 for PCTs

Required Skills and Experience

Must have:

• Stepdown experience
• Telemetry experience

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience with CV and vascular surgery populations
• Experience within the last year in open heart surgeries, TAVR, lobectomies, aortic aneurysm repairs, and fem-pop bypass
• CVICU experience

Responsibilities and Procedures

The following procedures are commonly performed on this unit:

• Epidural management
• Chest tube management
• Tube feedings
• IV gluccomander
• Management of cardiac medications including phenylephrine, dobutamine, dopamine, milrinone, cardizem, amiodarone, insulin, heparin, nitroglycerin, and ketamine

Certifications Required

• ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
• BLS (Basic Life Support)

Floating Requirements

Flexibility to float to any stepdown (SD) unit with 1:5 ratios or medical surgical (MS) units with 1:6-7 ratios, as well as the emergency department inpatient holding area (1:6).

Dress Code

Scrub Color/Attire: All navy, white tops with navy bottoms, or all white.

Weekend and On-Call Requirements

No call required. Minimum of 6 weekend shifts (Saturday/Sunday day/night) per 6-week schedule period. Flexibility to work on holidays is expected.
