SUBSTITUTE INTERPRETER FOR DEAF/HARD OF HEARING STUDENTS

Reports to: Special Services Director, Building Principal or designee

Supervises: None

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Interpreter certification via the Wyoming Professional Teaching Standards Board
• Have training necessary to provide interpretation for students using alternate modes of communication (sign language, etc.).
• Have experience working with deaf/hearing impaired students in education settings.
• Strong communication skills

POSITION SUMMARY


The educational interpreter's primary function is to facilitate communication among students who are deaf or hard of hearing, their hearing peers, the classroom teacher and other personnel in the school system. The educational interpreter provides interpreting and support services to students who are deaf or hard of hearing being educated in the school district. Other duties that may be performed when they do not interfere with interpreting include tutoring, participation in meetings and being an active member


of the school's educational team.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

• • Interpret for and tutors students with deafness or hearing impairments. Services will be provided within the classroom or other educationally related environments.
  • Communicate to the Deaf Educator assignments and academic or other needs of the students.
  • Modify lessons under the teacher's direction for student success.
  • Spend the majority of time working directly with individual children; spends minimal time on typing, making copies, correcting papers and other clerical tasks.
  • Serve as a facilitator of communication: to interpret. When the need arises for both interpreting and some other task (e.g. recess/hall supervision, tutoring, etc.), interpreting takes priority and should not be interrupted.
  • Assist with the setup of note taking services for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, when necessary and appropriate.
  • Participate in educational team activities either in person or via a report. Input from the interpreter may involve information regarding communication strategies and progress related to the child's use of the interpreter.
  • Serve as a liaison between the students who are deaf or hard of hearing, hearing peers, staff and faculty members.
  • Provide interpreting for school functions outside of the classroom, extracurricular activities and parent meetings when requested in advance.
  • At times, when it does not interfere with their service as interpreters, educational interpreters may be asked to assist the teacher with some of the more routine classroom duties.
  • Use any scheduled preparation time (comparable to teacher preparation time) to preview materials, conference with teachers, record data in logs, research signs, etc.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Maintain professional standards as delineated in the Code of Ethics of the national Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf.
  • Participate in necessary inservice training programs as assigned and take responsibility for keeping current with training and certification requirements.
  • Perform other duties assigned by the principal when this does not conflict with the primary responsibility of interpreting.

LANGUAGE SKILLS


Ability to read and interpret documents such as policies and regulations, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine correspondence.

EVALUATION


Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on evaluation of certified or classified personnel.

SALARY SCHEDULE


This position will be paid according to the approved Temporary & Subs Salary Schedule.

Assigned by the supervisor.

Employment is contingent on a local, state, and federal criminal background clearance.
